Secret Service didn't flop last night because it was shit, it flopped because it went head to head with the second half of a Man United cup tie watched by around 7m viewers.

It's likely that many of the 2.8m who did watch won't bother next week, but the available audience will be bigger.

Either way, it's a clunker and it will only get a dead cat bounce next week. BBC1 may still have to pull both shows to save face. Brightest will probably plod on with c 4m.

Is it right in me saying that the cbb rating is one of the highest rated saturday rating since the move to channel 5? Surely the 2nd or 3rd highest?

Must say I am fascinated by this change in strategy from C5. Prior to the launch, there were few promos on C5 itself for the new series. Now it has actually started, ads are popping up on ITV. Obviously it's more important how it rates post-launch, so that change in focus could prove a smart move indeed.

As for Splash, great numbers for the opener. I'll caution against declaring it a hit just yet though. I think people are more likely to stick with the first episode of a new entertainment show than they are say a drama, especially when the competition is as dire as it was last night, so I don't believe the breakdown tells us too much.

Good start for Splash, reasonable start for Britain's Brightest, both looked like crap. But Splash looked like fun crap and Britian's Brightest dull crap. Critics must be praying Splash drops next week because they want to use their belly flop headline. I'd laugh if Splash continued to do well.

FA Cup in primetime did well and it was a Man U match so was bound to get the viewers, You see Robbie people will watch football on ITV. ;)

Take Me Out is looking much healthier now it isn't facing Strictly and good to see Casualty get 5m, but BBC1 made a mistake not showing it last week when there was no competition. But apart from Splash the wow rating for me is 4.1m for a repeat of Mrs Brown's Boys. It's a comedy phenomenon!

Until last night I was only expecting around 3.5m for Splash. However, based on the massive reaction I knew I'd underestimated it, and it came in about where I thought it would after seeing the response. A great start for it but we'll see where it goes from here. It could drop significantly to 3-3.5m or it could hold steady. I'm just watching it now. It isn't as bad as the reaction suggested to be honest. It's a bit dragged out and Helen Lederer was ridiculous but it's fairly watchable and it was a good move getting Jo Brand in. I await next week's rating with interest.

Decent start for Britain's Brightest and nice growth throughout the show. Very poor start for Richard Hammond's show although it could pick up away from the football. Not great for Animal Antics but I didn't expect much more. Good for In It To Win It and Casualty but I expected a little more - Splash seemed to dent the former quite significantly in the first 20 minutes. Solid enough for Take Me Out and tasty demos as ever (it did well in ABC1s too). The total audience is fairly average for it but after a tough Autumn run they'll be relieved it was back in the mid-4s at least. OK-ish for Jonathan Ross Show. It isn't particularly good but it's pretty par for the course for the show and the demos (especially the ABC1s) are good, which is why they keep making it.

If I was in charge of BBC1 I would have looked at Antics and Hammond and thought "What the f*** is going on here? Is it April Fools Day?" Then I would have decided that I now have two shows that can air on Sunday afternoons after the repeat of Countryfile instead of a repeat of Escape to the Sodding Country.

I would then demand that the BBC3 repeats of Merlin are used to start Saturday evening which would be used as a lead in for Britains' Brightest which actually wasn't that bad.

The two preceeding shows were awful. Embarrassingly bad and cringeworthy.

Am totally gobsmacked at how well Splash! did. Goes to prove the public will watch any old crap! Am also interested in how low the 16-34 age group ratings were for Britains Brightest. Is it because they can't add up, can't spell or work things out due to not actually having to do so without aid at school?

Also disappointing for Celebrity Mastermind. This has done well all over Christmas so suggests that scheduling it at 5.30 was an error.

    20:40 - 5.86m (24.0%)

Splash! was beaten by Britain's Brighest from 19:55 to 20:15 although it beat In It to Win It.

Good rating for splash but it will be getting a lower lead in next week and I think it will fall.

As soon as Britain's Brighest finished, the audience plummeted to low 4m's for the next 20 minutes until Splash! ended.

That's a very nice breakdown. It didn't seem to loose any audience. I wonder if it could rise next week with the absence of Football and the possibility of it's lead in maybe being higher.

Good for both shows. I would like to see them hold on to there audience. as some have said Britain's Brightest was actually quite good.

Well yes, but it's not that many is it?

The BBC would have averaged 8m for last night's tie when it had the rights, peaking at probably 9-10m.

The official rating will be a lot higher though, considering it's #1 on iPlayer at the moment. It's the highest CBBC overnight rating for quite some time, since the final episode of Tracy Beaker Returns last March which had 564k.
