Why are films released as triple plays rather than single blu rays?

I've noticed this a few times before, and today I was looking for The Inbetweeners Movie on blu ray, and although they have it in a triple play box set, they don't have it singularly which is really annoying. I don't really understand why anyone would want a triple play box set unless they were going to give two versions to other people.

You can get the DVD by itself, just not the blu ray... I'm guessing it's related to money making but it's really annoying.

It all depends on how you look at it.
For some it's just a money making con, but when youve got the likes of Transformers 3 and Harry Potter DH pt2 which you could get for under £13, that arguement is a non starter for me.
For some others they see it as future proofing as they may only have a DVD player now, but may be looking into getting Blu Ray sometime in the future so with a Triple Play they don't have to go and buy the film again as they've already got it.
For some that already own a Blu Ray player they may find the DVD or digital copy usefull for when they're working away from home or on holidays etc.

^ Lots about triple vs single in this hilarious topic.

The triple play blu ray is only £4 more than the single DVD on Amazon for example, £4 more is worth the blu-ray experience for a film you like imo.

Yes it pisses me off that so many releases don't offer the Blu Ray only option. If the film companies don't have faith in the newer format why should the consumer?

I think it more for those who only have DVD players but are thinking of upgrading.

I'm not keen on the digital copy as it is DRM'd.

You can take it to a friends house who may not have blue ray.

Film companies have one interest- to get the most income for the least outlay.

The DVD is already being produced in massive numbers, and costs them (apart from authoring) 7p per disc to press.
They can charge £££s more for the triple play while upping the cost by almost nothing.

For a DVD buyer waiting to upgrade, I can almost see the point. But as BR players are £40 now, it's a bit daft not to get a machine and wait for the discs to come down in price and fund it that way.

Can be OK on kids titles-BR in the lounge and DVD in the bedroom.
    Hmm. Maybe for porn too:o

Thing is, I know I'd never use the DVD or digital copy, which is why I find it so irritating!

    They do.
The Bluray is available for the set price.
The bonus discs cost next to nothing to add to the package so the idea that a Bluray on its own would be cheaper is an illusion.

Several studios have already stated that its the DP/TP releases that are driving sales of Bluray.

SO when you can get a Bluray aswell as a dvd for only a few pound more than the dvd on its own its fair to say its the dvd buyers who are being taken for suckers

    I agree with this 100%.
It's simple maths, just take Transformers 3 as an example. In Sainsburys Triple Play £12.99, DVD £9.99 and on iTunes £9.99.
I know which I'd rather choose, even if I didn't need the other 2 formats. If I wanted to I could sell the DVD and digital copy and probably get £5 for each.

I can't understand how the 1 disc blu ray one side and DVD on the other hasn't taken off.

Triple play is good as many/all bedroom Combi sets and second players are DVDs.

Digital copy is good for iPhone iPad PSP PS VITA,

That does depend on where you are at the time though surely?
I could quite happily watch a film on an iPhone while sitting on a train or a flight.
Also it doesn't just have to be viewed on an iPhone as you can watch on iPad, Laptop, PC or Mac.

I know, I was just mentioning the iPhone. If you are on a flight, take a laptop/bigger screen. Not a tiny mini mini screen. :p

I'm hoping that wasn't meant seriously.
Not sure how rich you are but I'm not rolling in cash so if I'm on a train or on my lunch at work a "crappy iPhone screen" or similar size is all I can afford. Sure if I had a spare £500 I'd have an iPad or similar but I don't.

I wouldn't go that far but I would say a film shouldn't really be watched on an IPhone or an IPod as that isn't what it was made for, when Michael Bay was making Transformers or Christopher Nolan was making Inception or any film with massive special effects I don't think they were thinking "Oh I hope that this sells well on IPod". I understand for dramas and things but isn't it only really the big action films that are on triple play? Don't think I've seen a drama on it.

It's just I wouldn't trust anyone's opinion on it. If I read a DS poster or one of my friends said "Don't watch Transformers its rubbish I watched it on my IPod on the train..." I would immediately disregard it as your clearly not gonna have the same experience when watching it on a 50" blu-ray or IMAX.

I wouldn't listen to anyone talking about a film they watched on a nano bot bot iphone thingy screen. :p

Well if you have a television at home, then you must tie your television and dvd player onto your back and take it everywhere with you - and then find a plug. Can't be that hard! :D

I have a Bluray player in the living room, but not in the bedroom, or at my parents' house, or on my laptop, so Triple Play sets are absolutely brilliant IMHO, You get your film with almost no limitations of where you can watch it.

Quite right, they would buy a Galaxy S2 as bare minimum;) I've used a Sony PSP for watching films when away from home sometimes and its done the job.

Exactly my friend, exactly! no one should have to watch a film on an apple product. *shudders*.
