FFS Richard Desmond, I posted about a week ago in this very thread, that Channel 5 needs to distance itself from Jim Davidson as much as is possible.

Putting him in now, is utter madness, and can only reflect badly on you.

    What are Channel 5 doing?

Ratings I reckon. But anyway, Jim hasn't been charged with anything and is on bail until March, so "Innocent until proven guilty".

As for tonight, am I right in thinking BBC1 hasn't aired any trails for the promising and much-anticipated Animal Antics and yet has been flogging the dead horse that is Hammond's About, or whatever it's called, with trails in seemingly every junction?

Surely the Tim Brooke-Taylor offering is likely to be better and more popular in the right slot? Fronted by a comedy legend and made by Talkback, it can't be that bad can it?

TBT himself is quoted saying: "When I was presented with the idea of this show I thought 'this sounds good'. Believe me it's much, much better than that. The only problem I have is being upstaged by very, very funny animals'."

Sounds a hoot. But will be crushed by football/early timeslot.

It's got a grown man dressed as a dog. It's for the kids. It's in the 5.30 slot from next Saturday, out of harm's way. Actually it should have been on at that time tonight. 5.30 for Celebrity Mastermind seems a waste looking at its solid performance across Christmas. Has certainly justified a recomission for next Christmas. (In fact, I recommend that BBC1 runs Celebrity Mastermind for 46 weeks a year and just sticks The One Show on for two weeks over Christmas.) But they should try and get some harder general knowledge questions. The questions they have at the moment are, quite frankly, patronising.

With Animal Antics, I bet the links will be excruiating but the clips may be quite funny. Overall I imagine it'll be considerably less irritating that Richard Hammond's Secret Service on afterwards which really looks dire.

This is why I disapprove of BBC4 dropping DLT hosted editions of Top Of The Pops. However I would agree with this....

Certainly they shouldn't be stopped from appearing on television. Personally I'd question whether or not Celebrity Big Brother is the right show or forum for them to be on in this kind of situation. Of course without knowing more details of what, if anything, Davidson has been accused of and how seriously the police are treating the accusations and what kind of evidence exists its very difficult to know whether its a good idea to put him in or not. As I mentioned above it would a disaster of gigantic proportions for Five if they were to put him in and it turns out he's done something. But everything is just speculation at this point so who knows...

How much would be allowed to say about this on TV and how much of what he says would C5 be allowed to transmit? Sounds like a potential legal headache.

innocent, guilty or not, its still pretty poor taste, and it looks like Channel 5 is trying to profit from the recent headlines.

Doing too many 'list' things lately, but its not often we get access like this, so..... :o

    Top 10 - Live Audiences of 2012
    01 - 10.70m (44.6%) - STRICTLY COME DANCING (22/12/12 - BBC1, 20:55)
    02 - 10.30m (42.8%) - CORONATION STREET (23/01/12 - ITV1, 20:30)

    05 - 9.48m (40.5%) - I'M A CELEBRITY - GET ME OUT OF HERE! (11/11/12 - ITV1, 21:00)

    06 - 9.10m (37.0%) - DOWNTON ABBEY (23/09/12 - ITV1, 21:00)
    07 - 8.69m (42.2%) - THE VOICE UK (14/04/12 - BBC1, 19:00)
    08 - 8.65m (34.0%) - EASTENDERS (02/01/12 - BBC1, 20:00)
    09 - 8.36m (36.2%) - MIRANDA (26/12/12 - BBC1, 21:00)
    10 - 7.99m (32.6%) - DANCING ON ICE (08/01/12 - ITV1, 18:30)

Excludes news, sporting and one-off events.

    A few sporting events:

    01 - 21.59m (82.6%) - OLYMPICS 2012: OPENING CEREMONY (27/07/12 - BBC1, 21:00)
    02 - 21.54m (80.5%) - OLYMPICS 2012: CLOSING CEREMONY (12/08/12 - BBC1, 21:00)
    03 - 19.78m (68.6%) - EURO 2012: ENG V ITA (24/06/12 - BBC1, 19:45)
    04 - 16.63m (61.8%) - OLYMPICS 2012: MEN'S 100M FINAL (05/08/12 - BBC1, 21:42)

And because I know some will ask, in the live figures (versus 2011 where possible):

    Strictly Come Dancing: 8.60m (38.9%) [2011: 8.84m]
    I'm a Celebrity: 7.82m (35.0%) [2011: 7.63m]
    The X Factor: 7.51m (33.1%) [2011: 9.33m]
    The Voice: 6.34m (31.6%)
    Dancing on Ice: 6.14m (25.6%) [2011: 7.29m]

To my knowledge, the live figures above excludes adverts. Just a note though, none of the above figures can be compared to the usual overnights we get as they are two completely separate things. I still think its worth mentioning though as the above really shows what is appointment to view television rather than fast forward and watch in your own time later.

Did a few people on here get a BARB subscription for Christmas? We seem to be getting a fantastic amount of data at a time when most of the internet sources are slacking.

These presumably are the live viewing series averages?

I don't like looking at live figures - they are far too low! :D

Just shows how many people are now spending their telly-watching time not watching what is actually on now.

Or not spending their time watching telly at all.....

That 27.02m peak will take some beating.

Roger Mosey of the BBC tweeted in August that the "consolidated peak" (numbers we very rarely ever see reported) was 28.7m.

How tantalising that we were so close to a bona fide 30m peak figure!

I suppose, strictly speaking, the 13.34m is for New Year Live/Hogmany Live.

I genuinely don't think that a 27m peak will ever be beaten. There are only a couple of possibilities...

    - The Queens funeral or a Prince's funeral.
    - If England ever get to a final of a World Cup or Euro.

Either way, I don't think i will see any rating as high with that peak in my lifetime (and I like to think I have another 60-70 years left!)

Yes, they're the live viewing series averages. Shows how much is catch up nowadays - of course a lot of it is before 2am so gets thrown in with the overnights.

The Olympics delivered in pretty much all ways. Ratingswise it could not have done any more and the whole year was special in a way which its hard to see subsequent years getting near to.

Getting back to now, this is a big weekend as the channels set out their stall for the coming weeks. ITV having a big day with two good looking F A Cup ties(only drawback is how long the post match wittering is) and have to say the Splash/Take Me Out combo looks fresher. Splash is hard to call-if its funny it could be a grower and the beebs post 7.00 line up is there for the taking for something that can grab people.
Animal Antics is like a million other shows on a million other channels around the world. What can be said about the man in the dog suit

Respectable considering much of CBB's core audience is out on a Friday. I'm still going for a series average of 2.5 million.
While this would be a flop on the big two channels, for Channel 5 this is their X Factor.
I hate it when you say that.

CBB would be getting even higher ratings on the big two channels so the whole "these figures would represent a flop" argument is a bit redundant.

C5 has lower audience expectations and CBB is currently thrashing them.

Animal Antics was obviously recorded months ago and due to air before the Olympics - they introduced one package of clips by saying "ahead of the Olympics this year".

    Whoops...

Please tell me the laughter track is canned and this wasn't recorded before a studio audience?

Bit of a let down this - it's just a clip show!

Now I think I understand the whole "Delivering Quality First" thing. The quality was the Olympics - then everything after that - well, just isn't quality!

P.S. Anyone got any idea what sort of ratings Woof! and Press Gang used to get on CITV back in the early 90s?

The earliest mention I can find on Google is from Broadcast magazine on May 17th, 2012: http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/in-depth/the-broadcast-interview/the-producer/dan-baldwin-talkback/5041950.article
But Talkback is far from a one trick pony. The label has gone from producing 19 to 60 hours of content in Baldwin’s four-year tenure; in 2012 alone, there’s new BBC3 series Britain Unzipped and upcoming BBC1 Saturday teatime show Animal Antics.

The former gave Radio 1 drivetime DJ Greg James his first major TV gig, working alongside comedian Russell Kane to unearth Britain’s dirty secrets. The show has struggled to win over big audiences for BBC3, but Baldwin is proud of helping bolster emerging talent, and says Unzipped has performed well online. Meanwhile, Animal Antics will embody the “bonkers” spirit of Lemonaid, featuring The Goodies star Tim Brooke-Taylor as a newsreader with a talking dog for a sidekick.

“BBC had all these animal clips, but couldn’t think of a way to house them,” Baldwin explains. “Our head of development Juliet Denison came up with the idea of a newsroom.”

The way that quote is worded, suggests it was recorded before May 2012. Which means it has been held back for a long time... although just why they've put it on now, I have no idea.

    Predictions for tonight:

    BBC1

    Celeb MM 4m
    Animal Antics 3.4m (football HT-enhanced)
Secret Service 3.8m (football post-match enhanced)
    Britain's Brightest 3.7m
In It To Win It 5.2m
    Casualty 4.7m
    Mrs Brown's 3.1m

    ITV1

FA Cup Live 5.3m (peak 8m)
    Splash! 5.5m
    TMO 4.5m
    Jonathan Ross Show 3m

Thought I'd better go low on the FA Cup and Splash lest I get accused of "over predicting"...

But I think we can confidently say Splash is the only real "draw" tonight and should win the evening, unless the football reverts back towards "BBC days" figures.

Hammond's heap of shite so far looks like being as big a heap of shite as the trailers made it out to be.

This BBC1 line-up tonight is the pits. Cohen has questions to answer!

A bit confused, is Splash! actually live? By the sounds of things, some of it is pre-recorded, some of it live.

And looking at the current scoreline in the football, I think we should now be looking at a peak towards the 9-10m level that an early evening Saturday fixture featuring Man U in midwinter would have bagged as a matter of course for BBC1.

EDIT: The higher peak may now boost ITV slightly, adding a little to my predictions made above. With another 4 minutes left, there will be no post match chatter boost for Hammond, but Britain's Brightest starts with perfect timing really - though I suspect viewers will be switching back to Splash in fairly short order...

This Richard Hammond vehicle is complete muck, it'd be sub 2m on ITV, although this is BBC1 so it'll probably get nearer 4m, especially as it may be default viewing in non-football households.

Bugger - ITV HQ have just gone from near wrist-slashing desperation to exultation - a midweek prime time replay from Old Trafford now beckons!

They might need some Kleenex in the commentary box the way Tyldesley reacted to the equaliser....
