Best Router to Buy
We're currently on Sky Broadband and I've been using our ageing Netgear DG834G v2 ADSL router instead of the Sagemcom router Sky provided (as I had problems with its WiFi and router capabilities when I tried setting it up).
However, the Netgear router (which has been trusty for over 5 years) has had a few issues over the past few months where by its WiFi can cut out or it reboots itself. So I was thinking about setting up a new system as follows: Put the Sky router by the master socket and use it as a modem only (found instructions on how to do this) - this will also keep Sky happy. Then have it feed the internet via Ethernet cable to a new router upstairs. For this system I need a router with Ethernet WAN port rather than an ADSL port, however, I've been looking round and while I've found a few, they all seem to have mixed reviews. I've looked at the Netgear WNDR4500, Belkin N750 and Apple Airport Extreme. I'd like one with Gigabit Ethernet ports and USB so I can use external hard drives on the network. Also, with this system, if we ever switch providers or move over to fibre-optic broadband, all I have to do is replace the 'modem' with the new one provided and the rest of the network is unaffected. Can anyone recommend any suitable routers? Thanks |

I run a similar set up to how you want yours.
Sky router at master socket, wireless switched off. 4x ethernet cables plug into this pc, sky box, network switch which ps3 and network hdd connect to and finally TP Link WA701 ND http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-W...0272168&sr=8-1 All my wireless devices, iPhone, iPad and wireless printer and any laptops connect to the access point. I get full wireless signal all over my house, which is loads better than sky one provided

Expensive (and ugly), but I have found the Billion Bipac 7800N to be superb.
It has both an ethernet WAN port as well as an inbuilt ADSL modem, so you have the choice whether to use it in conjunction with the existing modem or to replace it altogether. This thing honestly runs for months without a reboot. Plus it can do some fancy things like QoS, VPN server. |

Get another 834GT from ebay, that is what I just did, may be old but still one of the best ADSL routers out there.

Hiya,
If you have the ££ Draytek win for me solid built router never managed to kill one yet!! i use a 2820vn and it does really take a hammering but never misses a beat. Wifi coverage is really solid aswell. I know they are expensive, but i got through other brand, so to me the Draytek has lasted Regards Jon |

Just returing to my thread as I still haven't got round to getting a new router yet.
I've been doing some more research and have narrowed it down to three dual band N routers: Netgear WNDR4600 (N900) Belkin n750 Apple AirPort Extreme I have already got all the instructions on how to setup the Sky Sagemcom router as a modem only so thats why I'm simply looking at 'cable' routers rather than ADSL Modem-Routers As I've had a Netgear for the past 6 years, I'm leaning towards getting the N900, however, I just don't really know which is best. All the reviews on the internet seem to rate all three about the same and they all have their own pros and cons. |

If you want to futureproof yourself, you can get Netgears latest router. That takes advantage of the new wireless ac standard, called the Netgear R6300:

![]() My only criticism of my wndr3700 is that the 5GHz range is not too good |

What about the Billion 7800N, I believe their new firmware can support MER working on Sky broadband.

Could I hijack this thread slightly, and on a similar subject, ask if anyone can recommend a router with a big wireless range?
I'm lucky enough to have quite a big garden. I've heard power boosters are available on eBay. Are these any good? thanks in advance! |

The ASUS RT-N56U Wireless Router is the best router I've ever owned and as an IT Consultant I've owned a lot over the years. Great price with great options and great wireless range. It put my old Netgear 3700 router to shame.
