Now, I have a conundrum. In that I have just had a look at the pricing package for the new live linear channels, and it's only an extra £2.50 for BT Vision users to access. Which is excellent value for money. But one needs to take out a new 12 month contract to get them.

So my conundrum is, I fully intend to switch to YouView when the HD channels Sky Sports, BT Sports and the Eurosport channels become available in the summer of next year. But I want a subsidised box. However, if I re-contract to BT Vision in the expected launch of February, I won't get a subsidised box, I'll have to pay £199 for it.

So what do other BT Vision users think about this situation? As I'm thinking I'll just access the new content via VOD only, which is the way I normally watch TV (apart from sport).
Was discussing this earlier with a friend who has Vision. My advice was why rush to YouView? Her TV has a Freeview HD tuner so she can watch (but not record) the terrestial HD channels and touch wood her Vision box has been reliable.
Presumably subsidised YouView boxes will be available in 2014 and if not, there are plenty on Ebay at the moment and I predict will be many more in a year's time and they will be cheaper, so the difference in subsidy and an ebay box would not be much.

The key benefits in foregoing YouView for 12 months are:
  • earlier access to the 18 extra channels.
  • a reliable, tested solution when BT Sport launches,
  • the 2014 YouView boxes may be better specified than the current ones (eg recording capacity)

Interesting thread , I've just priced BT Vision and because of the necessity to take Infinity to receive linear channels it would seem Sky or VM (Premiere collection) are still currently my best option and also have a far better channel range.

Hi, could you expand on that please, arirsole? Or provide a link perhaps? And the availability of what?

I have been with Vision since the start of the service, I have had the silver box, the black box, the black v2 with 500gb hdd and a Humax Youview, I have sent them all back since I discovered that the promised linear channels that BT has commited so much money to will not be available in my area, something to do with multicast and infinity, so my answer to the OP is be very sure that the various services they require are in fact up and running in their area and not just empty promises.......................................

Query - how did you manage to send your Humax YouView box back, by complaining about a service that hasn't even launched yet?

You seem to be intent on an argument rather than an answer to an OP question, however as one last courtesy I will tell you that I had the Humax on trial and was offered the opportunity to keep it but declined when I read the timescale involved in receiving the advertised new channel (being 76 years of age I might not live that long), it was after I returned the Humax that I became aware that I would not have been able to receive the channels in my area.................

This is an interesting BT Sports article from the Guardian (courtesy of the broadcasting forum) -

BT to spend big as it throws down gauntlet to Sky over sports coverage

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...ports-coverage

"The new sports channels will be made available to Sky viewers but will also be aggressively marketed to existing BT customers, with deals for those who also subscribe to its telephone, broadband and television services."

In English-speak, 'aggressively marketed' means discounts galore for BT customers taking out triple play packages with the sports channels. Nice.

I see Now TV is getting sports from the spring. A tenner for a days access to all 6 channels seems expensive on the face of it, but for those of us who have a Sky subscription purely to watch a few games a month, it could work out cheaper to have Youview + BTV + Now TV, even if it seems like its not as good value.

Umm, no. There will be no live channels from Now TV on the YouView platform. Though games consoles or PC would be an option for you.

Thanks for that.

But something tells me the Sky Mods are suffering from left-hand right-hand syndrome. Because thats not what they said on the Now TV forums -

http://community.nowtv.com/t5/Xbox-3...iew/td-p/29600

"Due to certain restrictions, Youview can not have specific options added to its service, live TV is one of those restrictions so unfortunately, it will not be getting added."

Regards

Igor

NOW TV Team
-------------------------

How bizarre. But now I wonder which declaration is right? Because where YouViews concerned, the more the merrier, I say.

Hmmmm.

Who knows what the restrictions really are. Maybe because it is only a day pass, it gets categorised as PPV rather than live TV and is ok.

Don't talktalk already do live TV through their player? What's the difference?

TalkTalk and BT are Stakeholders (partners) in YouView. Sky are not. They are only a content provider and so have no say in the way the YV platform is run.

The YV users on the Now TV forum asked the Sky Mods exactly what these 'restrictions' were, but they refused to answer. And then deleted some negative comments on the thread too.
