Do you live a double life?

Do you ever feel like you live a double life? for example, do you talk about your personal life while at work or not? I don't as I prefer to keep my personal life separate to my working life but then having said that, people rarely chat to me at work about anything other than work related things.

I wouldn't say I live a double life as such, I don't lie about myself but there are things that maybe take people by surprise about me, I suppose, like the fact I've appeared on TV (well via a video recorded on my digital camera) and the fact I'm keen on 60s and 70s music and things like that, or the fact I flew to other cities to see a group live during two consecutive weekends in 2012, fitting it in around my job. I never mentioned it to anyome. Some people probably think im really boring - some of the time I am, most of the time even in their minds but I've had the ocassional exciting day or so :)

I don't mention certain things to some people as I suppose I presume they'd think its a bit weird or whatever - not that I should care what they think.

My husband and I separated last year and my son and I moved out of the family home into another house 10 miles away. All this upheaval and stress was going on last year, and I never told anyone at my work. To this day they still have no idea of my change in circumstances ! I couldn't bear to be the subject of speculation and discussion amongst all the staff so I said nothing !

Used feel like I had a bit of a double life when I was a bouncer a few years back. My daytime job was (still is) a professional office environment and I hold a fairy responsible position within the organisation, so Mon to Fri I behaved as such. Come the weekend I was in full bouncer mode, breaking up fights, throwing people out, taking girls home, and generally having a good, and often crude, laugh. People in the office would have been shocked to see me as a bouncer, and vice versa.

Come to think of it I had a bit of a triple life. Being into sci fi I used to attend a lot of conventions and get all giddy about the latest Star Trek episodes. None of my office or bouncer colleagues knew about that.

I don't know about leading a double life but I don't talk about myself much at work, at least during work time. The odd time I end up in the staff room I will likely bring something up (bile, because the conditions are so disgusting :p).

There is someone I work with who does the exact opposite. They never stop talking about their life, what they've had for their breakfast, all the jobs the got done in the morning and the ones they will do during their dinner, how many minutes it took them to walk between x and y, who between them and their partner is making dinner, how all their children are doing (including the ones living abroad), when they are next over, when they are next going over to them. When their next holiday is. How much it cost. What stag/hen do they're going on in two year's time. Countless other things, all in the first 10 minutes of being in work.

I don't know about anyone else but I like to...ease myself into work of a morning (not a morning person, nope :D), and I'd be more receptive to their life story after my first coffee tbh.

Yes I suppose I do. I am a bit of a hippy one one side of my personality (I have lots of hippy friends and we go camping, have mini festivals etc) the other side is a bit of a meathead, gym nut, bouncer type. I am a hippy at heart though.

Like you OP I keep work and personal life separate and never talk about my personal life at work.

Don't you have a wonderful girlfriend who you love? I have seen you speak highly of her on here before. Having love in your life makes you luckier than many others out there.

I've only had 2 jobs, one of which lasted just over a month. The one I'm currently in I sort of already knew, but have had my preconceived notion that I shouldn't talk about my personal life re-affirmed. The place is full of gossips. Gossip is one thing but it's actually quite cruel bitching that I've heard about others. So thankfully I haven't shared much with anyone so far :p

I suppose I also have a unintentional double life on here since I come across worse than I do in person, some people try to make themselves more interesting online, I sometimes sound boring and sour

An easy thing to say when the concept of 'I' eludes you. :D

I'm sorry for your trouble SeasideLady.

I'm a long term divorcee, but it took years to sort of recover, even though it was an inevitable and essentially reasonable thing.

It's horrible, but if it's the right thing it's a HELL of a lot better than the alternative.

And I understand why you didn't want the world and his mother bearding you about it.

I hope you had some good friends and family to see you through.

I have not had a 'double' life.

However, my daughter is leaving for university in a couple of weeks, and I'm starting a new job.

    I now have the opportunity.:o

    Nope.

As people here will probably have noticed, I tend to dredge up personal anecdotes to support an opinion at the least opportunity.

I do that because I find that life has a way of providing precedents for almost any situation so I'm quite happy to put it all in one big "filing cabinet" for future reference so work, personal and social lives are all fair game as source material in any situation.

I now feel almost duty bound to have an exciting double life.
