Suprised no one has mentioned Carry on Admiral , not a carry on how come they could use the name and get away with it.

It was the first official Carry On film that actually got away with it a year after Carry On Admiral (also out on dvd).
Peter Rogers then registered the name so that other film makers could not use it.

Its a sign of the times that a special offer at Play.com has items at far higher prices than most other retailers charge all the time.

Amazon and their marketplace sellers all have the film for around £3

    Dentist In The Chair.

On one of the Python movies, I forget which, they have the titles for this as a spoof when you press to play the movie.

I love classic British cinema and love the Carry Ons except, as usual Emmanuelle and Britain which I think were trying too hard to appeal to the cinema market of the late 70s. At that time I well remember that as audiences plummeted there were far more soft porn and horror movies being shown in mainstream provincial theatres, and it wasn't really until the very late 70s and 80s that cinema going started to increase with blockbuster films like "Star Wars" bringing back family audiences. By then of course the Carry Ons were seen as dated and irrelevant by the mass market. Certainly Emmanuelle and Britain are of their time, and the worse for it - and it's interesting to see so many others who feel they were two Carry Ons too far.

We wont mention Columbus, a good idea desperately seeking some talent and a script.

I also will give the thumbs down to the Carry On Laughing tv shows, the ones I've seen on the ITV dvds are not what you might call ATV's finest hour. I grew up in the heart of the ATV area and I don't recall watching any of these when first broadcast, so I suspect my late father must have decided they were awful as well! The best part of the Laughing programmes shown on the DVDs is the ever wonderful ATV fanfare and ident at the start (the famous "Zoom 2") after which they go down hill fast. That awful stock ATV canned laughter track, that also turned up on the Muppet Show they made, doesn't help.

Just as an aside, a couple of months back I read an article for our local Talking Newspaper tape from one of the local Welsh magazines written by someone who had worked as a driver on the filming of Carry On Up The Khyber, which actually took place in Snowdonia, where apparently some scenes from the Inn of the Sixth Happiness were also filmed. Odd to relate the pass leading from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the North Wales coast is called the Khyber Pass by the locals!

On the bank holiday I watched Behind, which in spite of its faults I really enjoy, and England which is just utterly awful. Nice quality picture though.

Unfortunately the once almighty Play.com is rarely the best place to go pricewise for anything these days .

However - I always visit them before buying elsewhere just in case I catch them on a good day as they do have the very occasional good deal

Wombatofludham (above) has it just right. The later COs gave up fighting against the tide: Emmannuelle and England have nasty sexual overtones reminiscent of the Confessions films which were making an impact at the time. Hinting about rudeness was no longer effective, and it's the showing of rudeness that makes those two films so poor. They just aren't in the spirit of the COs, and it's the spirit that counts.

I'd argue that Columbus is in the spirit. The scripts feel like a first draft, there are too many characters, there are some shaky performances (Rik Mayall is dreadful), but it has the essence of Carry On built into it.

The TV series is hideous. I have only ever watched a couple, and sat stony faced through them. The canned laughter is indeed most unwelcome ...

Totally agree but it is funny all the same Juliet Mills is gorgeous, Cribbins as Albert Poopdecker has a great role & good ole Kenny Williams as captain Fearless who is anything but.
Then Carles Hawtrey I really liked him the same in virtually every role he did Oooo Helloooo.

Saw Juliet mills in Nurse on Wheels years ago on TV I always associate it with another similar film Twice round the daffodils. must check if they are available

A few years later went to see Avanti starring Juliet Mills When I say see I really mean see she was stunning in minimal swimware and was either topless or nude at one point, very different from her low budget britcom days !!!

Both movies were released together on a single VHS double bill.
Nurse On Wheels is out on dvd but the other one seems not to be.

I've never seen Nurse on Wheels or twice Round the Daffodils.

There's a bit in the Peter Rogers autobiog (I think!) where he explains that he was leant on by execs to recast the lead in NoW. Joan Sims was the original intended lead, but the execs felt she was too plumptious to be the leading role. Juliet Mills got the main role and Joanie was bumped sideways to play the loveable best friend.

Poor Joanie. Always the bridesmaid ... :(

I was gonna say that the unfeasibly pretty girl pretending to be a boy "Bob" character from Blackadder was a complete pinch from Carry on Jack but I believe there was a real case of a female masquerading as a Navy Officer for many years and the ruse was only discovered when she died.

I saw twice round the daffodils a few years ago on CH4. It's a odd watch really, as it is very similar to Carry on Nurse. It does take a more serious approach to the subject, quite touching actually in its own way. Both films were based on the same play, typical Peter Rogers making the most out of every penny he spent!

Just watched 'Cowboy' (we're a week behind in Scotland - thank you STV).

Really enjoyed it - kind of sad to see Charles Hawtrey playing a drunk as 'Cowboy' saw the start of his real-life drink problem that would culminate in his abrupt departure from the series after 'Abroad' in 72.

Brilliant film though, with many laugh-out-loud moments:

KW: "My granddaddy was a Burke. He married a Miss Right and became a Right-Burke."
PB: "And they've been Right-Burkes ever since."

    KW: "Raise a posse."
JD: "Why, don't they like cats?".
KW: "Not a pussy a posse!"

Jon Pertwee slightly hams it up as the Sheriff, but if anything it adds to the film.

There really wasn't one dud film between 1964-74 - I even like 'Girls' and 'DIck' (and yes, I realise that sounds like a line from a Carry On film...!)

I had a nice parcel come through the post yesterday, a bumper pack of DVDs from Amazon - three four packs of Carry Ons for £7-8 per pack and three of the ITV dvds for under £4 each, the same as the price they usually are in The Works high street bargain bookshops (well worth popping into if you fancy picking up Carry On and other classic Britcom dvds cheaply). With my as yet unwatched box set of Ealing comedies, that's several weeks classic British comedy viewing ready for the Winter!

Yes Carry On Cowboy is a good film - like Carry On Screaming it is a bit different from some of the other Carry On films.

Would it not have been cheaper to buy the £40 complete boxset?

If I hadn't already got some on DVD already, then yes, but as I'd started buying them from The Works on impulse whenever I pop in for cheap printer paper, I needed to fill in the gaps.

It's usually the case that when I start buying individual dvds about halfway through a box set comes out. Happened with Crossroads...or should I really be admitting to that guilty pleasure?;)

I would have bought the boxset then sold the older dvd's.

If you refer to the Crossroads Archive discs then they are so expensive on their own the boxset is an essential.

Network charged around £20 each and sold them as website exclusives and then less than a year later does them in a generally available boxset less than 20% of the original price
