I have a red patch on the side of my left breast that is hot and itchy ( three inches by three inches)

I didn't really think much of it till my freind said about inflammatory breast cancer. ( I had never heard of it )

Anyway went to the Dr who gave me some cream to try for two weeks..
The cream didn't make any difference, so went back and she gave me two more creams to use (steroid and something else)
Didn't do anything. So went back and she called another Dr in for a 2nd opinion and they both agreed it was nothing to worry about and to come back if anything changes..

Im still worried as how can something that is hot to touch ( and itchy) and makes your breast feel hot inside and sometimes throb, not be anything.

The thing is I have problems going to the Dr anyway so for me to be pushy is not going to happen. :o

Anyone had this before? What should I do?

Im just so frustrated at my own inability to stand up for myself in a Dr office/hospital situation.

I have had something very much like that on my foot but it was a horsefly bite. It was hot and itchy, had a central puncture wound and it drove me mad. My whole foot was boiling hot and I have never known itching like it. It was infected and only cleared up when I went to the doctors and got antibiotics as well as cream. It was also really lumpy and swollen. It was at it's worst at night. I felt like I could have clawed my own foot off, it was that bad. It also throbbed constantly.

It was there for weeks too. Does yours have a red blob in the middle? It sounds like some sort if infection if it's hot, itchy and throbbing but that's only speaking from my experience.

It doesn't sound like the doctors did a very good job of explaining what they think it actually is. I suppose you could make another appointment and just explain that you're feeling anxious and would just appreciate if they could explain what they think it is, or print off a sheet of info.. just something that can put your mind at rest. I can't see them having a problem with doing that. Don't worry about being intimidated.. doctors surgeries are intimidating places at the best of times. You're not alone.

If the above doesn't reassure you then perhaps you could ask for a third opinion or even consider booking a private BUPA appointment. But try not to worry.. two doctors have checked it and I think if they'd felt any lumps or had any suspicions it could be cancer they'd have immediately sent you for checks. Hope it clears up soon.

Hot and itchy - sounds like you have an infection. Could be a milk duct for example (you don't have to be producing milk or anything so don't panic on that part!). A course of anti-biotics may be needed.*

If you are not happy and still worried, please go back. Tell them that it's still not right, and it needs diagnosing. Sending you away with "don't worry" is just not acceptable when you are worried because you know it's changed and not usual for you.

[* Just to add this isn't medical opinion etc, just a guess based on my own experience!)

I think you should follow this up, as others have said. If you have issues with dealing with doctors, nurses, etc., then take someone with you who will speak up on your behalf. Good luck!

Thanks everyone.. I will go back next week and probably take my freind.

The creams were antibiotic and steroids.

I did this a few mths ago first time in my life I have ever done anything like that .. I was in a group for the illness I have and they said to me say you want to see a specialist as its important that you do...

So I ask my Dr to refer me and I could see she wasn't happy about it but she did and I was really pleased with myself..

Monday when I went back about this patch of skin and she called another Dr in. She said This is sweatpeanut the lady I was talking to you about the other week who wanted to see a specialist  I dont understand why it was mentioned right then in front of me.. but I just felt that they felt I was just being a pain. Or worse making it all up :(

Maybe its my own paranoia. I just dont know. Its not easy living with the memories of a mum who had Münchhausen and Münchhausen by proxy ( once I got to a age of independence I never went to a drs and then in my later life having to deal with Drs when I have my own mental health problems as everything seems to get shoved onto that label.

I have now made a appointment on-line for the 9th.
I will take a printout with me about inflammatory breast cancer.

Phew never did anything so fast in my life normally takes me months to make a appointment :D

Thanks again everyone. I really do appreciate it.

The graphic I have printed out is the one on this link.
I have 1... both of 3 and 5 as well as hot to touch ( that isnt on that one but is on others) I think that is enough to be referred to a specialist.

thank you, i would be worried too, insist on a referral.

i hope it goes ok, once you`re away from the gp you don`t have to worry about the labelling, they`re seeing you fresh and with appropriately trained eyes.
