Computer not recognizing Ipod Nano

My computer isn't recognizing my ipod nano and my ipod won't even connect to itunes.
When i plug it in it will charge but it's not showing the 'do not disconnect' screen.
I have tried installing itunes again and tried different USB ports.
I have googled but not had much luck.

i have checked some info if we can have some confirmation of what i have found out will be great thanks
due to it being an old model maybe 2 years+ old and not been updated for sometime it could be causing an issue, also it is on a computer that is running old xp service packs and it also an old itunes
i have tried to update and use on my itunes but with no joy
any ideas anybody of how or if this issue can be sorted

EDIT: Dont worry you won't lose your songs
its 1 ipod that i have tried on 2 computers, which is why i think its the ipod softwear that is not upto date i have also tried to do a reset
