Year in brackets is the original year of release and the No.* is the highest chart position that the song reached. Last number in brackets is the sales figures

Surprised Ray of Light isn't there, that hung around for ages seemingly.

Her chart stats aren't that impressive anyway when you compare to the likes of Michael Jackson...his are just off the wall (ha-ha).

I'm surprised Hung Up is so high. I know it was a massive hit, but 2005 (or 2004) was the lowest ever year for sales.

    Surprising list.

I too thought Ray of Light would be higher up. Also, I remember hearing La Isla Bonita all of the time growing up - I thought that would have sold more too.

my fav (open your heart) isnt there either... :(

shows her earlier material is favoured over her later 'old hag past it trying to be young and sexy' era... :)

    genuinely surprised by:

Gambler rating so high! I always liked the song & I guess it was part of her 1st peak period, but it was never featured on a Madonna album (tmk?).
    Also 4 Minutes...?!

Hollywood should have rated much higher! Infact most of my favs are in the 30's section!

OYH is one of my faves too and it's a crying shame it isn't in that list. And yes it is great to see that her older stuff rules over her more recent stuff.

4 Minutes was HUGE! One of the biggest songs of 2008, so not surprising that it's on the list.

A bit tragic that ALL of her singles from MDNA are in the bottom 10% of the list - that is, her latest release era

Breaks my heart what a low seller Take a bow is over here, when it remains her longest running number 1 of her career in the states. Oh well.

Although Madonna has not had a UK Million Selling Single, she has had 8 UK Albums that sold over a Million.
Which is 4 more than her 2 biggest Solo Female rivals, via that statistic. Both Whitney Houston & Celine Dion
have had 4 each. Madonna's 1990 Compilation, 'The Immaculate Collection', has sold over 3,550,000 Million
in the UK, & it is the UK's 11th Best Selling Album - of all time.

Madonna's Top 5 Best Selling UK Singles are:,

    1. Into The Groove - (1985) - 860,000
    2. Like A Virgin - (1984) - 780,000
    3. Holiday - (1984) - 770,000
    4. Crazy For You - (1985) - 670,000
    5. Papa Don't Preach - (1986) - 645,000

    'Like A Virgin' was a No.3 Hit. 'Holiday' reached No.6 in 1984, No.2 in 1985, & No.5 in 1991.
'Crazy For You' reached No.2 in both 1985 & 1991.

The fact that Madonna is the highest selling female artist in the UK makes the lack of a million selling single all the more surprising. It's no shock that she's sold the most singles in the UK for a female artist, she's released A LOT of them over the years.

Kylie Minogue isn't far off four. Kylie, Enjoy Yourself and Fever have all sold over a million, Ultimate Kylie is a fraction under. Anyway, this thread isn't about album sales, it's about single sales. Madonna fans always seem to twist discussions in order to bring up her other achievements.

except, i don't think zeus555 is particularly a madonna fan though. however, i do agree her albums selling achievements are not being debated here, so why the irrelevant kylie album sales statistics?

it is surprising that she has never a had a million seller in the uk, but she has had her fair share of platinum hits to be fair and her top 10 biggest hits have all sold over half a million copies each.

I'm not actually a Madonna Fan. It was quite legitimate for me
to point out that she has had 8 Million Selling UK Albums, when
she has not had a Million Selling Single. It was to show how
surprising her lack of a Million Selling Single is.

And the fact that she's released a lot of UK Singles has no real
bearing on her having sold the most, for a Solo Female. She has
had to remain popular enough to place most of them in the Top 10,
or Top 5. (Although that factor was missing with her 'MDNA'
Singles). After all, Shirley Bassey has also released dozens
of UK Singles, but her Sales are a fraction of Madonna's.

I see now that her closest rivals have all had 4 Million Selling
Albums in the UK - including Kylie. But, those 3 rivals have all
had at least 1 UK Million Selling Single. Celine - 2, Whitney - 1,
& Kylie - 1. Rihanna has had 3 UK Million Selling Singles, & it
is she who has over-shadowed Madonna for several Years now.

Kylie's 1988 debut album was the first album by a female artist to ever sell over 2 million copies in the UK. It's still the 58th best-selling album of all time in the UK.
