League Table decided by alphabet

On Monday Night Football last night, Martyn Tyler, said that if Chelsea had won 2-1, they would have gone into 4th place on alphebetical order.

How would u feel if your club, missed out on Champions League Football becauase of that rule, i didnt even realised that existed.

Also i can imagine the Football Clubs wouldnt be happy, especially if they got relegated because they were called West Brom and not Wigan just to use a example.

Wouldnt there be loads of chaos if such a thing happened, case the alphabet, could cost a club millions.

Has anybody heard of the rule?

not sure why they said that last night. Dont know if its correct or not but i cant find anything regarding it.

Id assume they would use the same rule for deciding the league winner...

    http://www.premierleague.com/content/premierleague/en-gb/fans/faqs/who-wins-league-if-teams-finish-on-same-points.html
Who wins the League if teams have the same number of points?

If two or more teams are equal on points, the winner is then determined by goal difference and then, if necessary, by the number of goals scored.
Where teams are equal on points, the number of goals scored and goal difference, there will be a play-off to determine the winner.
We do not look at the head-to-head record of individual teams.

If they absolutely couldn't separate teams I think it'd come to drawing lots as a final resort, otherwise we'd be looking at Aaston Villa by now.

    That's incorrect.

MOTD said Chelsea would go fourth if they won 2-0.

Placements are based on goals scored and goal difference.

They may well have but if it was the last game of the season, there'd be a play off.

Yes, because a two goal lead would have meant they'd have scored one more goal than Spurs, presumably.

So how is what has been said by Sky, incorrect?

The 'they would have gone into 4th place on alphebetical order' is clearly incorrect.

How is it clearly incorrect based on what you said?

    Not alphebetical order.

    Not alphebetical order.

But you didn't contradict anything. Sky know that and presumably Chelsea and Spurs have scored the same number of goals. Hence why the 'If Chelsea win 2-0 they'd go top on goals scored'

If they won 1-0, by the logic of your own post, the goals scored would be equal too. Otherwise how would a 2-0 win mean they scored more goals than Spurs but a 1-0 wouldn't mean they scored exactly the same number?

Whether it's incorrect or not, what is not in dispute is that it was said. Anyway, what about if Arsenal finished fourth and Aston Villa fifth? How could you argue that Aston Villa couldn't play in the champions league because of the alphabet??

Oh,and it's [pedant mode on] alphabetical order,by the way. [pedant mode off].

'alphebetical' was initially quoted from Op, why don't you pedantically correct him too?

Or the other spelling mistakes in this thread.

It is technicaly correct. At this stage of the season, teams with identical records would be listed in alphabetical order. It is just for convenience though and would not be used to decide the final positions.

I hear Wolves tried turning their first letter upside down to avoid relegation

I'm sure there's a team in Wales called AAA something, they'll be itching for the Euro Superleague to kick off.

Either that or they're wanting a credit card.

Teams with identical records at this stage of the season would be listed in alphabetical order just for convenience.

It makes no impact to anyone.

If the same applies after the conclusion of the season, then a play off match is arranged if a title, euro qualification or relegation is at stake...

I'm sure no-one wants a pointless play-off match at this stage of the season just for 'bragging rights'...

It's just for convenience, seriously people believe that a team would be relegated etc: because they begin with W and not A.

Correct. Its purely for the purposes of printing a league table.
If all were tied at the end of the season then there would be a play off. Otherwise there would be a quick name change :D

What if three teams at the end of the season, had the same points, goal difference and the same goals scored?

Would they use some kind of Round Robin?

I always thought in the event of clubs tied on points, goal diffeerence and goals scored, the matches between the two/three of them should be looked at first before any play-off match. Would save an extra match or three being played :D

Or it could go down to the team that has the fewest players who have cheated on their wives. :D

AFAIK these are the placment rules...
At the end of each season, the club with the most points is crowned champion. If points are equal, the goal difference and then goals scored determine the winner. If still equal, teams are deemed to occupy the same position. If there is a tie for the championship, for relegation, or for qualification to other competitions, a play-off match at a neutral venue decides rank.

So unless athe championship, relegation or Qualification for Europe is involved there is no playoff, the teams share the position in the table, but for convieniance of displaying the table they will usually be place in alphabetical order.
