So long as they do not incite hatred or cause an obstruction no. Limits on speech should be kept to a minimum.

It's up to residents to tell the council what they want in their area. Personally I think they are unpleasant and bother shoppers, especially in tourist areas they should be moved on.

Certainly they should require a licence and not be allowed megaphones.

I went to Totnes in devon and saw a street preacher. While he was ranting there was a sign next to him saying " he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy"
    Hehe!

That's pretty much it I think.
The only other thing I would add would be that they shouldn't be causing a noise nuisance (so no shouting, no amps etc).

Lots of them in Glasgow city centre as well. They seem oblivious to passers-by smirking or giggling to themselves :o

Yes; certainly no amps or megaphones, Not sure about shouting, difficult to define and any law about shouting might rope in stall holders and that would be a shame I think.

There's one in Bradford, stands shouting about how we're all sinners and we should accept Jesus into our hearts. Odd way to pass your day really.

Could not care less about them. In Sheffield you walk past socialist groups, Islamic groups, animal rights groups, sometimes far right groups etc. I think it makes the high street a bit more interesting. They have a right to a voice just like I have a right to ignore them.

If I stood on a box with a mic in my hand & spurted my beliefs to every passerby, I would surely either arrested or get the shat beaten out of me by an angry mob, as my beliefs are guaranteed to upset every religion possible. Whilst the majority of my beliefs are not meant to cause offense, you can bet that someone will be offended by them.

Encourage the joys of premarital relations
    Encourage the use of contraception
    Encourage people to donate blood
    Encourage people to eat pork
Support marriage between same sex couples
Encourage not giving up things you love for a period of time

Encourage people to wear whatever clothes they want to wear, regardless of their religion.

Question if Mary was a Virgin or if she was a local bike.

Encourage wearing animal based clothing & eating animal products.

All of those above beliefs of mine, would cause upset with at least one religious group / Animals rights groups, I don't see it as being offensive but you can guarantee that it would cause upset to at least 1 individual in a town / city center.

Imho preaching of any form should be kept within the building that it is meant to be in & not spouted on the streets or in schools. This doesn't only include Religion, but also the likes of PETA etc. If you want to be religious or become a tree hugging vegetable molester, then go to your local church or meeting to find out more. Locations of these can easily be found in the Yellow pages or Google, there is no need to spout them out into the public.

I only came into this thread to see if someone had made this joke. I'm glad to see someone has!

As for actual street preachers, most of the ones I remember seeing were so out there in what they were saying most people would cross the road to avoid them. Let them talk themselves out as long as they're not breaking any laws.

thankfully we don't get many of them around here. We have got one that seems to pop up now and again trying to convert people to his beliefs.

I think if a Muslim did that around here, they would not be there for long. you only have to listen to the resentment when there was talk about a Mosque being built around here.

As for people being converted like they are in the video, they must have been weak minded.

i don't believe in a God, i think all religion is made up stories and I will never think any differently.

And weak minded by the preacher to think they had 'converted' someone to anything meaningful during a chat on a pavement.
Still consenting adults can believe what they like in my book.

A preacher once said to me that he hoped i'd burn in hell! Charming. To be fair though, I had just told him to f*ck off - it had been a very stressful day!

That is true, these adults can go home and for get all about it. i don't care what people believe in as long as it don't affect other people, the problem is a lot of it does.

Did he say those exact words?

Totally out of order if he did.

I quite like our local street preachers. I once saw them stopping at the newsagents for a Mars bar.

That was the two elderly black women. There's also an old white man who leans on his 'god is nigh' sign passing the time of day with his mates.

    I wonder if there's ever a preach-off.
