I don't get the whole, 'Follow me and I'll follow you back' thing. Why would you want to follow me, OP? Or why would I want to follow you, come to that?

    I occasionally use twitter...

But I get most of my news from twitter and I follow the kind of people that share my interests which makes twitter good to me.

The most annoying thing about facebook is that you're never quite sure what information it's putting in your friends newsfeeds. It apparently tells them when you've liked pages that has nothing to do with them and even shows them comments you've made on other people's timelines who they don't even know. I don't mind it showing up on my timeline but facebook acts like a gossipy friend who goes around repeating what you've said to everyone you know.
I find myself almost wanting to start up a 2nd facebook profile and friending myself just to be clear what is put on my friends pages. As it's a bit embarrassing to ask them.

At least with twitter they only put your own tweets on your followers feeds. They can only see when you are talking to someone if they follow both you AND them (how it should be). You have to actually go to the person's profile and unmark the 'no replies' option to see their conversations with people you don't know.
Then again I've noticed recently that the odd twitter profile I've gone on has started looking similar to a facebook page, but mine has yet to change and I don't really want it to.

So did my 11 year old grandson till his parents found out! The worrying thing was he had 36 followers.

Why do you have to follow anyone? Why can't you think for yourselves? (From probably the film most quoted on DS at the moment).

Perhaps because you'd like to get traffic information or news updates or other information via news accounts and so on. There are lots of handy accounts on twitter.

I have Twitter. I think it's a quick and easy way to interract with people who have similar interests to you. You get plenty of opinionated plonkers, but that's just like any internet forum. If you don't take it too seriously, or use it in the right way when it comes to serious things, it's a pretty great platform.

Because that's half of the point of Twitter. You follow people who you are interested in what they have to say, and people who are interested in what you have to say follow you.

11 years old is too young to be using these apps, but... worrying? That depends and Instagram isn't really a platform I would be getting all reactionary about. Snapchat, yes; but Insta; this is an app I have used pretty much since it was launched and I am yet to see anything pornographic on there, not heard of anything untowards going on (it doesn't court controversy) and have younger family members who use it and they haven't had any issues.

Were the 36 followers a bunch of girls his age? That's quite possible, and in fact, highly likely. I've a few younger family members who use Instagram and they have a heap of little fan girls on tap too tell them how cute they are.

Or are they perhaps spam? You get a lot of eastern people following/liking stuff, but they are just spam accounts that follow everything.

Practically speaking his 36 followers are likely to be a mixture of those along with a bunch who have been obtained through begging for a follow back or following people who always follow back (there is this thing where some people will follow anyone who follows them; it helps give them a bigger following and thus increases their percieved popularity).

I think it's quite clear that you don't use these apps/sites, know what they are for or how they work. It's not about thinking for yourselves or not as the case may be. I'm not sure why you feel the need to get all patronising about it.

This is roughly how following works:

Let's say you are interested in movies; you follow some media outlets that are relevant to movies and you'll find information and news appearing in your feed; a short blurb with a photo; followed by a link to a new article. I don't think that looks like "not thinking for yourself".

Or you like a certain celebrity; you decide to follow them and their tweets appear in your timeline. It's not all gossip or banal rubbish; that depends on who you decide to follow.

Actually, I didn't know that. I rely on BBC travel and the Highways Agency websites for traffic news. Are you saying I can get information about holdups as they happen?

I personally don't think that was a good example, but in theory yes (I've not tried it myself) but everyone gets different things out of Twitter; depending on how they use it, what they are interested in and so on.

    I'd use examples such as:

I work in an area where stuff like Apple and Adobe keynotes can be quite important; so I can get info as it happens via Twitter as media folk at these events will be giving "first impression" comments as they happen; so you can get glimpses into stuff before they go too press.

You can keep up to date with the latest trends professionally via Twitter; provided you know who to follow in order to get that information; for example I follow Forbes, TechCrunch, Mashable etc. and you get useful and interesting stuff appearing on your feed that's relevant and helpful too my job.

It's great for news; people go on about gossip, but also important news flares up on there; if you're following more respectable news outlets you'll get much more out of that than if you're following gossip rags.

You can get little insights into TV shows you like, recording artists and such; some stick up unplugged videos and things; for example Nina Nesbitt threw up a few in the lead up too her recent album launch; which I would not have known about if I hadn't been checking her out on Twitter at the time and people I follow had been responding too it.

A lot of people who don't use it assume it to be all banal crap; gossip and pointless glimpses into peoples lives; and a lot of it is (sometimes pointless, sometimes funny, sometimes interesting, sometimes not); but also a lot of it isn't gossip and pointless crap.

I was just pointing out that a concern over him having followers is probably a reactionary thing; thinking the worst as opposed too looking properly and being rational about it.

The likelyhood is that the followers were a mixture of school friends (if he has a Facebook or anything like that then Instagram will link you too your friends who have installed Instagram automatically if you connect your FB too it), people he has commented on, begged followers (follow me and I'll follow you) and spam accounts; rather than anything untoward.

Yup, for example I follow @trafficscotland (https://twitter.com/trafficscotland) and there's an account for the Highways Agency @highwaysagency (https://twitter.com/highwaysagency).

I sometimes drop in for a look and find it disturbing how often some people feel the compulsion to tweet unwitty witticisms and trivial rubbish throughout the entire day. It must be a kind of mental illness afflicting incurable attention seekers.

You're right, I'm sure. Though are you allowed to have a FB account at 11?

I looked at the Highways Agency one - very interesting. Though I'm not sure how I'd follow it while driving.

Has anyone read about Stephen Sutton today on Twitter? Very sad that he's reaching the end of his life at such a young age, but what an inspiring young man. He's managed to raise a huge amount of money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, with the help of celebs tweeting about him. I hope he manages to raise his new target of £1,000,000. His goodbye message and how he apologised for not saying proper goodbyes to people made me well up. :(

Surely it's not really any different to people who feel the need to post unwitty witticisms and trivial rubbish throughout the entire day on places like this forum?

As a communication tool it's rubbish. You waste so much time in trying to encapsulate your thoughts into 140 characters that it ends up as gibberish.

It's Twitter that's totally out of date, not those who criticise it. To reduce each post to such a tiny word count in this day and age makes it seem like a remnant from the 1980s.

I use Twitter a fair bit. Facebook for friends/family, twitter for the randomness, the fun, the arguments and chatting to all sorts of people. Met some great people via twitter too... Including my partner

The character limit is one of the reasons that I prefer twitter... It means people get straight to the point without waffling on and makes it quick & easy to read.

If so, follow me and I'll follow back :D

I'm starting to get addicted now... and Jessie J tweeted my tweet yesterday! :)

Do you use Twitter or Facebook... which do you prefer? I was using Facebook but I use Twitter more these days.

Not me. I can't be bothered with it. I suppose Twitter's kind of like an online diary where you put down what you've done and what your thoughts are.

Love Twitter and have met some great people through it.

It's fun, informative and totally within your control as to who you interact with and follow. I follow various celebs that I'm interested in, local Oxford accounts, breaking news; loads of weird and wonderful stuff.
