I'm spitting!

Enfield, [Norf London, innit], is applying to become the first area in Britain to ban spitting in public, eg on the pavement etc. A local petition gained 3000 votes in favour and [only] 4 against.

I understand that until 1990 it was an offence, but then it was abolished.

So how do you feel about this particular activity and would you support the return of the ban where you live?

I hate it when people randomly spit and you're left thinking "people are about to walk there..."

It's one of my pet hates. I actually heave at some people, you know the ones that have a good hawk up then lob a massive greeny out
    *shudders*
Even the sight of them on the pavement sometimes makes me retch.
There's just no reason for it is there?

    So yeah. Ban it.

It's when people spit inside - public buildings or on public transport - that I really get irritated.

Filthy disgusting habit, and a prime way to spread disease, I'd support the ban if it was brought in where I live.

Spitting in public is an absolutely disgusting habit and it seems to be on the increase. A couple of years ago I was out with my wife in the town centre when a young lad (one of a group who was lolling around on the cinema steps) did a gob which landed directly at my feet.
I went utterly ballistic and gave him a loud and very public roasting about respect and public health, to no avail of course. My wife was trying to pull me away, but I was determined to give this little disrespectful sh!t a piece of my mind.

That won't work. Get a bird on standby and make plans to get a cat.

It is disgusting, I hate wee neds who seem to think it looks cool. I'll hold my hands up and say that I may have done it maybe twice in my life, in the aftermath of a really bad cold, and when no-one was around. :o But I know it's nasty.

A lot of it seems to be people spitting out chewing gum. I've never understood why people chew gum in the first place, still less why they can't dispose of it properly.

When I lived in Rusholme and Tower Hamlets I would be woken most mornings by elderly Asian gentlemen clearing out whatever had gathered in their lungs over the previous night onto the pavements outside.

And the worst thing is when someone walking in front of you decides to lob a great lump of phlegm out to the side. I'm always worried it's going to blow backwards. And seeing it on the ground makes me gag.

It's a shame it even has to be banned.

It should be banned all over the UK. It's a filthy habit and it makes me retch every time I see slimy green phlegm on the pavement . even clear slimy spit makes me gag.
It will however take a rise in TB for it to be outlawed.
I also think fooballers should be banned from doing it as young men of a certain persuasion feel inclined to emulate their heroes.:(

What will the penalty be and who will enforce the ban?

    Edit: Just read the article.

Council enforcement officers would be empowered to hand out fixed penalty notices - expected to be around £80 - to anyone caught spitting.

Good luck to them. Who is going to give them £80?
