Billie Piper has been cast in Showtime's new horror drama series Penny Dreadful.
The Doctor Who star takes a leading role in the show, joining cast members Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Rory Kinnear, her agent confirmed.
It was revealed last week that the series will be filmed in Ireland this autumn, with shooting commencing on October 7 at Co Wicklow's Ardmore Studios and locations around Dublin and continuing until March 2014.
Penny Dreadful was created by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator), who will write and executive produce alongside Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road).
The eight-part series tells the origin stories of literary horror characters such as Victor Frankenstein, Frankenstein's monster, Count Dracula and Dorian Gray.
David Nevins, Showtime's President of Entertainment, said: "John Logan and Sam Mendes are two of the great storytellers of our time.
"The visual spectacle combined with the psychological insight in their reimagining of these iconic literary characters seems totally mesmerising to me. This promises to be a wholly original television show."

Timothy Dalton has also been added to the cast as well.

Oh, but it is more than just buying UK rights. They signed on as a "co-producer," so that is a bit grander. More expensive, and they get to call it a true "Sky" show, rather than just another American import.
Yeah, I know most people don't care about the distinction, but I am enough of a TV geek that I relish these little details.:o
BBC4 did something similar with a couple of series of French police drama Spiral
I'll be watching this one.
A similarity highlighted even more thanks to the film version including a Dracula spawned vampire and Dorian Gray.

Looks awesome, esp. with Eva (Casino Royale/Camelot) Green in it. Get the feel of a fusion of Ripper Street, Grimm and Sleepy Hollow.
They need a Dexter replacement, as their cupboard is a little bare of new original drama, and I think they are losing out a little to HBO/Cinemax, and AMC. It's nice to see Sky being involved in a number of these joint ventures, on a global stage - Penny Dreadful, Strikeback etc.. and investing money into production.
I don't think so. They debuted two new drama series last year, Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex, and both were well-received. This year they have Penny Dreadful, and later in the year, The Affair. And that is all adding to Homeland and Shameless. A cable channel like Showtime never really has more than five or six drama series in any given year.
