Stuff you buy at Christmas and no other time.

Tonight I've been having a conversation about things to try this Christmas. I'm getting very excited about it (It's a crappy time of year for me - death anniversaries etc. - so this year I've decided to get excited about it and lap up the festivities).

I've never tried brandy butter so I've decided I'm getting it this year (I've googled it and now know how to use it - but other suggestions are more than welcome). My boyfriend, when I asked him, was rubbish and didn't get the idea and simply said 'sweets'.

Rubbish.

If I was to make a fancy wee hamper for myself, what would you suggest I put in it?

Thanks in advance!!

Depends on your likes and dislikes really but the things we buy as Christmas treats are things like:

    Different cheeses
    Meat platters
    Chutneys
    Dry roasted peanuts
Different chocolates such as Ferraro rocher, those guiliyan shell ones etc
    Baileys
    Party food
    Mince pies

Just off the top of my head, I'm sure there's loads more.

Lidl and Aldi, being German, have lots of Christmassy treats - including reindeer steaks;-). I also saw three different types of stollen the other day. They also have the Italian Christmassy bread - panattone (mind you I think most Supermarkets have that now.)

Marzipan sweets are pretty seasonal and make a change from all the chocolate. My local Tesco even has some half way decent nougat for a change! Hopefully that's not just for Christmas:)

A plywood box of seedless clementines, £3 - £4. Feels like a treat to delve in, and keeps me away from the bad stuff.

I did buy nuts a couple of weeks ago, and a nutcracker. The nutcracker broke on an almond :( To be fair it was only a wee £1.50 job from Asda but still. Still looking for one that'll stand up to all the brazils I have left!!!

Niederegger marzipan, it's the best, their liqueur marzipan loaves are divine: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Niederegger-Assorted-Liqueur-Marzipan-Loaves/dp/B005PVO460/ref=pd_cp_grocery_3

Chambord Black Raspberry liqueur, the bottle and box looks naff but the liqueur is delicious and not oversweet.

    Cointreau.

Chococo Festive chocolate selection box, the best chocs ever, forget Hotel Chocolat! http://www.chococo.co.uk/chococo-xmas-selection-box.html

Marrons Glace (candied chestnuts), the whole chestnuts not bits of.

Sapori Panforte Margherita or the soft version Morbido: http://www.carlodeli.co.uk/christmas.html

If you want a really excellent panettone, Bonifanti won 3 gold stars in the 2014 Great Taste Awards for their Classic Hazelnut Glazed Panettone, although their Panettone Milanese is very highly regarded too. I like the bog standard Bauli ones myself.

Asda Extra Special Brandy Sauce with Remy Martin Fine Champagne Cognac.

Faustino I Gran Reserva Rioja 2001, ready to drink now.

Gingerbread. Well I get it all year round but I always buy one of those houses at Xmas. I also make some at this time of year which I wouldn't do any other time. It's a pity I'm not competent enough to make a house, I would save a fortune!
