From an interview with Julie's portrayer Julie Mullins...
Q. What led to your departure from the series in 1994?
A. I resigned. They weren't happy, which is why they decided to kill me off.
The full interview is here http://perfectblend.net/features/interview-mullins.htm and it is very interesting, talking about Julie's sexy school girl seduction scene that caused the entire episode to be banned in the UK, and the Lim family racism storyline.
She's much nicer than Julie! Edit, ok real Julie is much nicer than soap Julie!
Philip Lowry (Dennis Tanner). Dreadful story lines, complete waste of a character. He's another who has openly stated he didn't want to leave and apparently the woman who plays Rita was also upset at his sacking.
I think when an actor chooses to leave they shouldn't be able to say "please don't kill me off" that is the decision of the producer. A death pulls in viewers - fact so when you knock on the producers door and ask to leave then you expect to be killed off!

Dennis Tanner was not killed off.

I recall: they said it really loud, they said it on the air - woah, woah oh, on the radio!
Wait, why did they kill Jim off? I'm still pretty raw over that: I loved Jim. And I hate how he was treated after he was killed off.
Thankfully. He was awful.
