"This is the first holiday we've had in 26 years because we haven't been able to afford one until now"........yet they rolled up in a fancy car. That would be on finance though.
The holiday was a 'treat' because they had come into some money (ie his parents passing away). Guess the car came about the same way...
Such a shame Mark had to sell the place. He should have been more receptive to the hotel inspectors advice. I don't understand the logic behind getting someone in to help and then ignoring their advice. I can't help but think that if he had more supportive staff (I'm looking at you, Christian and Alison) he would have had a fighting chance.
I could go on a rant about those two, but they're not worth it are they. Absolutely horrible people who not only took their jobs for granted, but didn't deserve them in the first place. I am incredibly happy that Alison is working in a Spar, though. In fact I think I'll put up some bunting and have a street party.
Mark's record with his companies is not encouraging!
Call me cynical but I couldn't help but wonder if the Leeds couple were actually actors and the "daughter" was an extra, given she didn't speak .... but maybe there really are people like that?

I wondered a few things about that family, when he said they weren't married hmmmmm;)
The Chief Executive of English Riviera Tourism wasn't very pleased with him.
Carolyn Custerson, chief executive of English Riviera Tourism, said that the failure of Jenkins's business had been due to "poor management and a lack of investment" in the hotels. She also said it was disappointing that he had chosen to use the TV programme as a stage to sell the Grosvenor hotel.
"Locally Mr Jenkins is not regarded as being very professional. He has tried to infer that Torquay was to blame for his downfall, when in fact it was due to his bad management. The writing was on the wall two years ago.
"Mr Jenkins failed to move with the times. As well as offering no online booking facility, he was selling rooms at ridiculously low rates, which were just not sustainable. With no money available to invest in upgrading the properties, the result was poor service and standards."
Custerson said although Jenkins was trying to drag the rest of Torquay down, the town had in fact achieved a 4% growth in visitor numbers over the past year.
She also added that Jenkins owed a considerable amount of money to local suppliers, including £7,500 to English Riveria Tourism for unpaid advertisements.
Watching on +1, who the hell takes a photo of their mum & dad on holiday
I breathed a sigh of relief when I seen it was a framed photo he took out. When he said 'let's get Mum and Dad out then' and reached into his suitcase I expected to see two urns!

I really feel like Mark and his style of 'management' (for want of a better word) is completely outdated and harks back to perhaps a bygone era. It didn't seem to me that anyone worked professionally, probably didn't have clearly defined job roles and certainly weren't having regular assessments. I mean really that place makes Fawlty Towers look business like. The work areas were cluttered, shabby, and slack. Mark tried to up his game too little far too late. A shame though.

So after that last paragraph these critical comments are definately not independent then Carolyn? Is that a sour grape or twelve in your mouth?
English Riviera Tourism is controlled by Torbay Council - Mark too down market for you chaps? Not part of the cosy club?. No public purse to bail him out when bookings are down 50%?
What business is it of a separate tourist company what Mark does in a edited tv programme made by Dragonfly? Presumably Carolyn has and will decline to take advantage if shes invited to appear on a holiday programme to show why its great to holiday in Torquay and Paignton.
Carolyn, I believe Mark has made mistakes, mainly going too far in being affable to his staff. But general opinion seems to be hes basically a likeable guy. He has got you 16 hours of Torbay on the telly for nothing. Can you say what impact your own role has had in comparison?
Carolyn Custerson, Chief Executive of English Riviera Tourism: Carolyn has over 30 years experience working in the UK tourism industry and is known for her infectious enthusiasm and passion for progressive tourism. Previous roles include Director of UK holidays for SAGA, Specialist Tourism Advisor for Business Link Devon and Cornwall and Senior Tourism lecturer at Plymouth CFE. For 10 years Carolyn ran Close Focus Tourism Consultancy which was awarded the contract by Torbay Development Agency to prepare a new tourism strategy Turning the Tide for Tourism in Torbay . Carolyn was subsequently contracted to set up the ERTC as Project Manager and is now the English Riviera Tourism Company's Chief Executive.
But not ran a hotel?
Perhaps you could have helped with a few posh tourist do's at the Grose-vnor ?
I agree barclay that her assessment could not be considered independent or impartial stocked with the knowledge (grievance?) that £75k was owed to the Tourist Board.
However, it could be seen that this was the Tourist Board giving a lot of time, effort, advice, and even MONEY to the hotel... all of which was seemingly in vain. Possibly incredibly frustrating.
The Leeds lot are off home.... probably end up in Aberdeen in about 18 hours.
, lol . They took 8 hours to drive from Leeds, and it's only about 300 miles from Torquay. When they said they had been driving for 8 hours, I thought they'd driven from Scotland at least.

I got that impression too.
It takes 5 hours to get from London to Torquay so yeh 8 hours from Leeds. Unless you mean 18 hours? In which case diff story.

 if only he could do all the jobs himself he,d have a great business he,s just far too nice to his staff
I agree he's not great but the staff seemed to run rings around him.
Is Alison really working at Spar now
I wondered a few things about that family, when he said they weren't married hmmmmm;)
He's signed up recently with a major theatrical agency so he's obviously looking for TV and related gigs.

It looks like 4 teams took part and they raced in pairs.
Really wow I will really miss it one of the few things I enjoy on "normal" telly, could quite easily watch it every Sunday ongoing!
