Bill - (BBC Films)

Bill is a comedy based on Shakespeare's lost years - the period between him moving from Stratford-Upon-Avon to London and making a name for himself as an actor and playwright. No-one's quite sure what he got up to in those missing years but the guys from Horrible Histories & Yonderland have put forward their own version of events, bringing to the screen one of the funniest films in recent years.

King Phillip the Second of Spain has a plot...to kill Queen Elizabeth of England. So how will Bill Shakespeare save the monarch from certain doom while trying to carve his own path in life? Well, you'll have to go and see it to find out. But what I will tell you is that this is a fantastically strong and hilarious comedy that delivers throughout all its 94 minutes.

The jokes hit every target, the performances are a masterclass in comic acting, it's smart, it has soul, it's perfectly paced and is just a joy to watch from start to finish. I watched it with a full cinema audience (about 400 adults and kids) and there was so much laughter and two - count 'em - two rounds of applause at the end.

An absolute must-see for any comedy fan, history fan, British film fan or anyone who wants to enjoy themselves at the pictures.

Really? It's been out a week and, despite 500 views of this thread, no-one on DS has gone to see Bill? I'm obviously going to have to be more persuasive.

OK. You know the Alan Partridge film, Alpha Papa, right?

    It's really funny, yeah?

    Well, Bill is even funnier.

    That's how funny it is.

    Proper funny.

    Like...a lot.

Yeah...I think that should do it.

Do y'know, it's funny, I'd swear no-one else was posting in this thread just to ensure I come across as an especially eager fan with a zealous desire to promote this film.

    Oh right. I see.

Well, anyway...it can still be found in cinemas this weekend if you're at all inclined to try a slice of enjoyment. See if there's a screening near you here...

I'm gutted I didn't get a chance to see this in the cinema. A mixture of a stomach bug, cinema times not fitting in around work and a family member being taken to hospital made it impossible :( I'll be buying the DVD as soon as it's released though. I'm a big Horrible Histories fan so I support these guys.

Well you could do the ultimate fan road trip to Leicester's Phoenix cinema on Sunday and catch a last gasp showing on the big screen there.

    Oooooooorrrrr...

Yeah, the DVD should be out just before Christmas.

Want more proof of how good this film is than just going by my word? No problem.

Bill had its Australian premiere at the Adelaide film festival last night. It received a standing ovation at the end. A standing ovation!! And when the audience was asked to rate it, this was the result...

Seriously, this film has been beset by distribution issues this year and has had minimal publicity compared to other less worthy films the past few weeks. It would be such a shame if it didn't get the cinema box office footfall it deserves. Den Of Geek have even put together a list of the cinemas it's showing at...

This is the last time I'm going to bang on about it.

Until the DVD comes out and then I may bang on about it again.

Did I say last time was the last time I'd go on about Bill?

Ah, yeah...well I'm going to mention it again.

Bill has been brought back for a mini-burst of extra screenings especially for half-term, with cinema chain Showcase adding it to all its outlets across the country this week along with a number of independent cinemas joining in the fun.

Full list of cinemas can be found here...

*stands in a big white room and waits patiently while you all go off to watch the film. Occasionally looks at watch and does that raised brow facial shrug thing people do when they catch each other's eye at the bus stop 'cos they've been hanging around for ages but don't actually want to get into a conversation.*

Wow. Comparing it to Alpha Papa is not a good move. Most things are funnier than that. I did quite like the look of this film though. I will catch it on reduced price DVD.

No, just a huge fan of the people who made it. Felt the film deserved a bigger audience so keeping the thread hovering around the first page while it's showing in cinemas keeps it in people's minds. Distribution issues meant it didn't get the TV spots or billboards most new films enjoy on release. A loyal fanbase and word of mouth has almost been its sole promotion.

All my posts are made in good humour.

is D.I. Burnside in it ?

A joke linking the film to the classic ITV police drama 'The Bill' has already been done some time ago...

It's the film that doesn't quite want to leave the cinema.

There are special Kids Club screenings at all Empire and Cineworld cinemas over this weekend if you still haven't caught Bill and fancy it.

Find out if it's at a cinema near you here...

OK, you didn't fancy leaving the comfort of your own home to go see this film at the cinema. Fine, whatever, yeah. But now you can see it while totally staying in the cosy surroundings of your own living room...

Bill is now available to watch on iTunes...

Here we finally are. The last shout from me to get you to check out this fine fayre of a film, to marvel in mirth at this movie, to...to...just bloody implore you to watch it really.

Anyway, it's released on DVD today and so now fully out there to see either online or via a shiny disc at any time anyone wishes to do so or simply stumble across when fate allows. A fun 4 star review in the form of a sonnet can be found here if any more encouragement should be needed... http://www.thehollywoodnews.com/2016/02/12/bill-dvd-review/

    And so, I bid you...adieu.
