What is this "One Nation" idea then?

Labour seem to be using this in every statement recently.

One Nation for education, health, immigration and welfare.

but surely one nation means the same decision for all 4 corners of the UK?

Has Labour turned its back on devolution?

Surely if the people of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland decide to vote for their parliaments to do things different, then it should be allowed?

Basically Ed Miliband and his 'One Nation' is stating that Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland must do as England decides.......

I'm torn between "codswallop" and "piffle" on this one.

It's exactly the same as "all in it together" when you think of it except this one reminds me of a Queen song :D

Just another example of political catchphrasy/buzzwordy tosh.

It's an attempt to make ground on the 'One Nation' conservative mantra.

It's pushing the message that people are together under Labour and divided under the Conservatives. Normal PR codswallop soundbite tosh. Better than "I dropped you all in it together" which the present lot seem to mean.

As opposed to NuLab 1997 using "Things Can Only Get Better".... but would any Political Party want to rely on any formulaic autotuned bs produced by The Who or Queen?

One Nation, the Big Society, soundbite politics from empty vessels who are too far removed from our nation or our society to know or care about either.

    From Ed himself.
    • It teaches me most of all, we've got to use the talents of all, we cannot write anybody off in our Country. That's what One Nation is all about.
    • You know, take our young people. So many of the young people I meet are desperate for work. Government has a responsibility to make sure the work is available for them but they've got a responsibility to take the work on offer. That's what One Nation is all about.
    • One Nation Labour is about reaching out to every part of Britain. It's about a party that is as much the party of the private sector as the public sector. A party of South, as well as North. A party determined to fight for the future go the United Kingdom.
    • Just think about the spirit of the Olympic Games that we saw in 2012. That's what we've got to harness for the good of each and the good of all. That's what One Nation Labour is all about.
    • Britain is at its best when it comes together as a nation, not when it stands divided. That's what One Nation is all about.

Happy to have cleared that up for you. :)

    Some waffle there.

But collectivism and being stronger when you act as a group, is the key basis of the Labour/Union movement.

He's promised details on this in 2013, we will need to wait and see.

Presumably one nation is where we can afford to buy homes worth over £1m in Primrose Hill using money/property inherited from our dad. Just like Ed Milliband!:D

I think the 'One Nation' line has a bit more to it that just an ephemeral slogan because there is a bit of history attached to it

Tradionally one wing of the Tory party would describe itself as 'One Nation Conservatives' and it did actually have a meaning

It was the wing of the Tories that accepted what is referred to as 'the post war consensus', ie capitalism/mixed economy with social welfare, national health, responsibility of the upper classes and wealthy to 'look after' the less well off. They reject the 'class warfare' model of society, attempt conciliation with trades unions, minorities etc

The philosophy has a long history from the 19th century onwards and the post war Tory party would have been 'one nation' up until the Thatcher era

From Thatcher up to Howard the One Nation Tories were on the run within the party. It was thought that the election of Cameron signified a return to the One Nation philosophy

So what Labour is doing by attempting to steal the epithet is to ram home the message that Cameron is just a 'same old Tory' in the Thatcher mould and Labour are the inheritors of moderate conservatism

I found a conservative government rattling on about The Big Society and it's communistic vision of communities working together for the greater good firing nurses and librarians and replacing them with volunteers who get nothing but JSA, Ironic.

I equally find the opposition party who all but seperated the "United Kingdom" with the pseudo federalism that is Devolution rattling on about one nation.

I'm also slightly bewildered and concerned by the nationalistic tone lately of the labour party. I don't think an allegedly socialist party should be flirting nationalism.

However the One Nation is nothing new and is actually american in origin http://newsmax.com/US/One-Nation-Communist-NAACP-tea-party/2010/10/01/id/372305

I take it to mean, in theory, governing for the good of everyone, rather than just for people likely to vote for you.

When thatcher brought in the poll tax it was because "her people" were getting a bad deal, obviously someone else would get a bad deal but since they were never going to vote Tory anyway who cared.
