It's just flashed up on the BBC ticker that commentator Tony Gubba has died aged 69 after a short illness.

I'd no idea he was unwell - this has come as a real shock. Thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.

Oh my, knew he was ill from watching Dancing on Ice, a shame the series finished just yesterday, so he could get a mention.

I will always remember that moment when they went to him on Grandstand, and there was a pause followed by someone who sounded like the tea lady saying 'Tony- You're wanted on the phone'

    RIP Tony.

Didn't even know he was ill (and don't want DOI) but that's a big shame, and I hope that this weekend on MOTD and/or MOTD2 they do a little compilation of his most memorable commentaries/commentary moments or something similar.

Probably something he never wanted to disclose publically.

    Warm and honest commentator. RIP.

Very sad news - RIP. I'm not a DOI fan, did he work on the current series?

In the 1970s and 80s, he was also a presenter on BBC Sport, ranging from table tennis, to darts, to Sportsnight.

Was in his company at a bar several years ago. Genuine, friendly guy. At only 69, what sad news this is.

He missed the last three weeks but they did say he was ill. It was the final last night and they discussed it at length on This Morning today without revealing he was this poorly.

    Sad news.

He was only 69!!! He seems to have been around forever, or at least since the 70's anyway.

Sad news. Another childhood voice passes on.
