    Option B- Spend more and buy better.

    Depends on budget though and what you plan to use it for.

    Do you really need a mountain bike? In other words, do you plan to cycle on rough ground or will you use the bike mainly on tarred roads or smooth tracks?

    Interesting range of prices for that bike:
    Previous prices

    Please note, this product was previously on sale at

    * £319.99 between 20/09/10 and 21/09/10 inclusive
    * £159.99 between 13/07/10 and 20/08/10 inclusive
    * £149.99 between 13/07/10 and 20/08/10 inclusive
    * £149.99 between 13/07/10 and 22/08/10 inclusive
    * £319.99 between 13/05/10 and 12/07/10 inclusive
    * £319.99 between 13/05/10 and 23/08/10 inclusive
    If you do need a mountain bike, then it's probably quite a reasonable buy, though if you were to spend more you'd get better quality.

    I'll be using it for everyday use seeing as there's a 20 mile coastal cycle track near to where I live. I'm not planning on doing much offroad, but from the reviews on the Halfords site the bike seems to be ok, but wondered if anyone had suggestions on a bike if I spent a little extra and getting something much better? £200 on the bike alone would be the max that's without the lock, mudgards etc.

    It doesn't look that bad, but don't be fooled by the "original price" you would get a much better bike for the £320 it claims it is worth. Whether it is suitable would depend on how often you plan to ride it, how much mileage it's likely to get as well as the kinda terrain, hills, speeds etc.

    Cheap bikes can be wierdly specced out given most people just want them for casual use, like you may find that the bike is very "offroad". The mtb gear ratios, wheel size, knobbly tyres and shocks will be far from ideal if you plan to do mainly roads and smooth paths at a good speed imho. For riding around a coastal path somewhere presumably hilly, its probably alright. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_766179_langId_-1_categoryId_165534#dtab It's worth looking at the differences with that less offroad variant, to help figure out what kind of bike you want.

    The accessories will cost you a fair bit of money when you add up mudguards, locks (you'll need to secure that quick release wheel too), lights, repair kit/tools, pump, bag, bottlecage/bottle, gloves, helmet etc etc. To me thats all the more reason to spend a bit more on the actual bike if you plan to use it a lot :) Some cheaper bikes are also awful to repair because bits will break when you try to take them apart.

    I have the disc spec (brakes) version of this - and love it http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_518233_langId_-1_categoryId_165499
    At the moment the disc version is quite expensive, but as you can see prices go up and down.
