  iPhones have appalling batteries in general. I sold mine because of this issue.

  Turn of some features to extend battery life; (only turn them on when needed) - I turn off 3g, location services, bluetooth, push notifications etc

  its also one of the reasons for dumping my iphone. The desire also has average battery life but at least i can get to the end of the day without having to charge it.
