    Better from Steve today, Gowing (who is he?)

    He used to be a travel reporter, no Idea if he still is as I haven't heard him in ages.
    even said something along the lines of 'this is getting boring' and moved along quickly (although the conversation wasn't sparkling).

    Steve or Will said? I heard Steve say he is good at padding out his shows - don't we already know that?
    I wonder if JR stepped in after yesterdays shambles? Did Foss mention drag queens as per usual? Poor old Rog...

    Wolfie, I thought exactly the same. Especially after the discussion on here about whether presenters or producers read this thread.

    Have you seen her act?;):D

    Anyway, a man (woman) is known by the company they keep.

    I care too about the station. I would like more entertainment on LBC, putting aside Steve who provides a level of satire, there's a dearth of humour. Current affairs is fine, but everything has its place. All day, to hear nothing more than 'what the papers say', lacks any ingenuity or originality from Global, imo. If there were some theatre, arts, history programmes albeit for short time slots, maybe Steve's 'Bitchfest' wouldn't be the highlight of conversation so much. But in the meantime there's no dilution between Steve's show, starkly contrasted with hard-news programming. Why can't the station be more versatile with a varied format; I for one, would welcome a change.

    As I said in my Xmas Message (kindly linked again by Top Man) the station really do need to cover the arts - theatre, books, music, performance and more. Campaign for Real Arts Programming is already underway. How can LBCcontinually ignore the arts in the way they do?

    Nooooo!!! :rolleyes:

    This is why I switch over to BBC London so often, especially on weekend mornings. Always informative on what's happening in and around London.

    Good grief! You actually change stations! How radical! :rolleyes: LBC do what they do very well. If listeners want something different, they switch to a station that provides it. You wouldn't go into a greengrocers and demand to know why they can't serve you with a burger.

    Many thanks for the usual high-handed and roll-eyed response. LBC have covered the arts very well in the past and even Jenny Eclair presented a show that was a lively magazine style programme covering theatre, music and books. I'm well aware that the station has changde but why is it too much to ask now?

    Oh and not everyone wants to listen to the BBC and their output.

    Steve has just read out an email from someone who mentioned the above. VQ, if it wasn't you, it has to be a poster here. :cool:

    Ahhhhh. I see that it has now been changed! :D

    Why does SA continue to give advice on diet and foods that are good/bad for you etc. As far as I can tell he eats rubbish most of the time, apart from sprouts.

    Just missed that. Heard The Max 'thanking' Bob and commentating that he didn't like his line of questioning. I may try and podcast that later as anybody annoying Bob Crowe is good value!

    Lets analyse.
    What do listeners want and expect from an SA show?

    Afternoon all. :)

    Steve definitely needs diluting over a 4 hour slot. Today's offering was a vast improvement. There were even flashes of 'new' humour.

    I enjoy his shows more when he has a grounded guest in attendance. Anyone with the ability to haul him ' back from the edge.'

    TBH, his anecdotes about his daily life amuse me. I find myself relating to his train /bus/shop etc experiences, without always agreeing with him.

    ***Memo : Stop putting lipstick on whilst travelling on trains******

    The remainder I take with a pinch of salt. ;)

    He regularly insults my job. This worries me not.... it's just Steve being Steve. :o

    I realize that a lot of FM's think differently, but I enjoy all the posts on here, whether SA positive or negative. :)

    { That is, apart from a few non regulars, who occasionally post unnecessary, derogatory, personal comments just for the sake of it. :mad: }

    In general, I would like to see more specialist spots dotted around & not so many repetitive political discussions.

    Eg : More consumer & legal advice: Film/theatre reviews & much more technical advice. { NOT with SA}

    I used to enjoy Carol McGiffen, Jenny Eclair, Jim Davis { NOT his Sex show. :eek: } & I have fond memories of Chris Hawkin's saturday afternoon slot.

    As TUK once said { where is she ? }
    " It may be a C... LBC but it's my C... LBC." :)

    it was a lively exchange indeed, definitely worth checking out on the podcast. bob doesn't do himself any favours sometimes, and arguing the toss about how the bankers are the root of all our evils with someone who used to work in an investment bank and who knows how it works was a bit silly.

    keep listening after the interview is over because a couple of callers later a very articulate woman rang in and tore a strip off james for how he dealt with callers generally, bullying etc which to his credit james took on the chin (whilst not agreeing of course)

    See, GS. It's exactly this kind of comment that perpetuates a not-so-jolly-atmosphere here on the wonderful LBC forum. I also must point out your use of 'our comments' has slightly cronyish undertones as in an 'us versus them' mentality. Just wondering who you are speaking on behalf of? Lastly,

    '...a couple of die-hards who've retained their sense of humour hang around.'

    Maybe it's the way I'm reading it but this comes across as having a bit of a dig against these 'devoted fans' who perhaps, according to you, have not retained their sense of humour. Shame on us!:rolleyes:
    Fed up with this sort of thing. Yet I feel unable to let it pass.

    At the risk of opening old flounces - well said Carrie! I did type a reply to G-S's post but then couldn't be ar*ed to post it!! :D

    At one time my sweet Crawley damsel.LBC did indeed tread those boards, Saturday afternoon was a wonderous time with old records/gardening/ DIY and car experts on call.
    Now the door has shut and the lid has gone up on the toilet. but that will not stop the song if only a whistle.

    I would like to see a 'before and after' picture.

    I saw him at The Mermaid and I hardly recognised him from the previous time I'd seen him. He must have lost several stones! Not sure about this LighterLife thingy though - sounds costly. :D As Steve A says - less food and more exercise - he is always saying that he could provide a diet sheet!! ;);)

    Wolfie is absolutely right - we do need more coverage of the arts on LBC and more humour too. Christmas has been particularly grizzly this year - far too much Margerison overnight for a start and too much Steve Allan. And I find this particularly sad as I used to have great admiration for Steve but feel he is now a spent force living off his fan base and producing very poor radio. I think part of the blame for this lies at JR’s door - he is
    letting Steve get away with murder. I would like to think the New Year would bring back the old Steve.
    Still it hasn’t been as bad as the Christmas when poor old LBC was sold off to yet another buyer and the new owner failed to put out any programmes at all during Christmas and the New Year. That was a bleak mid-winter.

    But the arts do need to be covered - Sandi Tostvig did this so well and with great humour.
    Would that she had the mid-morning programme and do a radio version of say the Evening Standard a newspaper now lost to so many people. James O’B needs to be replaced as a matter of urgency. He was dreadful when he first started. Talking to somebody working at LBC and asking why he was still there, I was told that he was being given a second chance. I think he has had long enough and far too many second chances and given the number of changes to the afternoon slots it seems perverse that he is still where he is.

    I remember Steve Jones used to do a book slot at 8.45 on Sunday mornings and Roger Katz from Hatchards came in to talk through the latest books and that was a great success. Hatchards sold a lot of books on the strength of those 15 minutes! A book programme is a must and I hope Ian Dale has this covered.

    Much as I like Clive Bull his programme at the moment is but a shadow of its former self.
    He used to have all sorts of experts on - legal - technical with the wonderful Barry I’ve forgotten his last name - medical and the great alternative health guru Michael van Straten now happily living in France. With the quiz and midnight murder this was a programme well worth listening to. Poor Clive often seems frightened of venturing into controversial territory. I suspect the dead hand of JR in this. I would much prefer to see James Whale in this slot - he is made for night-time radio and is very good at it. One of the few good things Global have done - that and Ian Dale and introducing Mellor to Livingstone although I suspect this was done for very necessary political balance. But why when every radio station in the Kingdom does sport on Saturday afternoons does LBC have to follow suit?

    But of all the great radio that LBC has ever produced I think of the wonderful Mike Carlton’s breakfast show just after the 8.00am news when he sang his daily ditty - a musical cartoon of the previous day’s events. Followed by a few minutes of Andrew Neil with a political update this was for me the best 10 minutes of radio that could be heard anywhere in the UK.
    I remember on the morning that LBC lost its license the news came through at 9.00am and was withheld from Mike in the certain knowledge that if he knew about it when he was on air he would blow his top! With Mike Carlton in the morning and the great Mike Dickin in the evening LBC was a force to be reckoned with.

    One day perhaps somebody will write the definitive and authoritative history of LBC before its glorious - and inglorious - past disappears in the mist of time. But nobody at Global - they do not seem to appreciate the value of what they now own.
    Amen!
