As we're coming to the end of 2012, I thought it would be fun to do a retrospective and see what everyone has as their personal "Top 5" Tracks of the Year. Links (and maybe a bonus Worst Song Of The Year) also appreciated.

Mine are-

1) Chevy Thunder (Spector) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW_HMJLKHso
2) Ho Hey (The Lumineers) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvCBSSwgtg4
3) Stars (Grace Potter & The Nocturnals) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml7TmC__eDc
4) Running To The Sea (Royksopp feat. Susanne Sundfør)

I'm embarrassed by how generic my top five are. I do listen to a lot of music outside the charts, but these are the five songs that have really stuck in my head this year:

    1. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe
    2. Tulisa - Young
    3. Cheryl Cole - Call My Name
    4. Loreen - Euphoria
    5. Little Mix - DNA

    I love Euphoria!

Listened to it a lot at the start of the year when it was still competing in Melodifestivalen and I got a bit sick of it by June!

These may or may not have been released this year, but I definitely discovered them this year, so in no particular order:

    Bo Bruce - 'Fighting Arizona'

Honestly right, I made a point of never watching The Voice, just the same as The X Factor because I just really don't 'get' the whole popularity contest they all turn into. Judges bitching for the sake of viewers and headlines and substandard singers glorified as something new and exciting? No ta. However, I did know of Bo when she was on the Orange unsignedAct shortlist, and was surprised to hear she was a contestant on The Voice and my blind cynicism meant I'd missed a whole series of live performances. Those who've heard her will have a tough time trying to argue she has a powerful voice, but personally I can't stand powerhouse vocalists who blast you with volume as a cheap substitute for emotion.

This song was written after she was sent to a rehabilitation clinic in the Arizona desert by her father to stop her drug addiction, and it's really a wonderful song.

    Imagine Dragons - 'It's Time'

What a song. This is the type of song that just rings with celebration and accomplishment. Over a stomping melody, chiming riffs and a chorus chant at home in buildings no lesser in size than the biggest arenas, 'It's Time' is Imagine Dragons' finest hour. Lead singer Dan Reynolds wrote the song whilst contemplating whether or not he should quit music altogether, but the result was for the better, hence the chorus' final line "I'm never changing who I am". It's catchy, it's loud, it's mid-tempo. It's lyrics speak of triumphing over adversary, and it's just a shame that the song never really has the success it deserved. It was the perfect soundtrack to the recent Stephen Chbosky adaptation of his novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

    Coldplay - 'Charlie Brown'

A lot of the time, I pay more attention to lyrical connections in songs, but at the same time melody is immensely important. I've got to want to remember the lyrics and be able to hear them back in my head clearly. Whilst the lyrical connection to 'Charlie Brown', which contains one of Coldplay greatest ever riffs (alongside the storming 'Lovers In Japan' and perhaps the psychedelic 'Hurts Like Heaven'), isn't so strong as it could've been, few can deny the sheer awesomeness of that riff. A sparkling, ambitious and beautifully matured interpretation of modern rock lifts Coldplay out of the MOR-wilderness for this track. Even the mentions of "All the boys.../All the girls..." can't diminish the spectroscopic abandon that this song overflows with.

    Kasabian - 'Goodbye Kiss'

Wistful sentiment isn't something that is commonly aligned with Kasabian who, throughout their earlier years were happy enough to make as many reference to British lad culture per song as possible. Oh sure, pretty much all Kasabian's music sits well with me when I feel like punching faces to the sound of jagged electro-rock such as 'Fast Fuse' and 'Club Foot', but 'Goodbye Kiss' is something quite different. There's still every finger pointing to the song being a work of Kasabian, but it's reserved delivery and honest lyrics make it stand out amongst an album of more of the same.

    Aiden Grimshaw - 'This Island'

Now, honestly, who the hell saw this coming? I mean fair enough the gloom-pop wobble from his time on The X Factor translates with the same slicing and unnerving intensity but the D&B productions and the effervescent synths buzzing around his deep vocal register on 'This Island' feel more like a psychotic Rob Swire than the trembling, bequiffed teenager we saw every Saturday back in 2010. With a glassy, slickly-polished production pumped full of more energy than an 808 on crack, the ice-cold sentiment of Grimshaw's inner angst burns with his trademark intensity.

There's plenty of others, but these came to me first. Hope you all enjoy. :)
