I'd completely missed that BBC Christmas special - the Beeb must be absolutely kicking themselves, particularly given that the final of DOI was the third highest-rating TV show (see post above) after the mega-soaps Corrie and EE.

It surprised me that it had higher ratings than X Factor and Strictly but in a good way - a far more entertaining and unpredictable finale than either IMHO

DOI has been ITV's most succesful show over the past year, and I was trepidacious wondering what the first show would be like (being a lifelong T&D Fan) but was pleasantly surprised by the high production values and professional staging, much more so than the one off BBC Christmas show, which was fun, but a little quaint. ;)

    2007 REALITY TV DAIRY

    JANUARY
JUST THE TWO OF US (BBC1)
HOSTS: Tess Daly and hubby Vernon Kay. Ahh.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Celebrity songbirds - including ex-EastEnder Hannah Waterman and Wet Wet Wet's Marti Pellow - couple up and aim to warble their way to victor y in the return of this duets contest.

    SOAPSTAR SUPERSTAR (ITV1)
    HOST: Zoe Ball
WHAT TO EXPECT: Soap stars like Jane Danson (Corrie) and Elaine Lordan (ex-Enders) prove they can sing too in this talent show.

    DANCING ON ICE (ITV1)
HOST: Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby
WHAT TO EXPECT: The likes of Lisa Scott- Lee, Duncan James and Ulrika Jonsson risk bruised bums as they attempt to glide gracefully to victor y in this skating competition.

    FEBRUARY
    THE APPRENTICE (BBC2)
    HOST: Alan Sugar
WHAT TO EXPECT: The self-made millionaire gets more wannabe big wigs in his firing line as they compete to become his £100,000-a-year app rent ice. Nic e wage packet but what a humiliating way to get it!

    MARCH

    CASTAWAY 2007 (BBC1)
    HOST: Danny Wallace
WHAT TO EXPECT: It's been a long time coming but finally here's a follow-up to the 2000 hit. And this time instead of chilly old Taransay, 36 British men, women and children will try to survive for three months on a remote South Pacific island. So even if it's all bickering and bust-ups at least it should be sunny.

    BRAT CAMP (C4)
    HOST: Unknown
WHAT TO EXPECT: Four mums and their tearaway teens get knocked into shape at an Arizona boot camp. Think Vicky Pollard on tour.

    APRIL
    BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT (ITV1)
    HOSTS: Ant and Dec
WHAT TO EXPECT: Bringing a new spin to the talent show form at, this searches for amateurs with unusual skills - anything from fire-eating to snake charming. The latter should come in handy as the judge is Mr Nasty Simon Cowell, aided and abetted by ex-Bay watch hero David Hasselhoff.

    MAY
    BIG BROTHER (C4)
    HOST: Davina McCall
WHAT TO EXPECT: Further twists in the familiar formula will keep us hooked on what will be the eighth series of the original reality TV show. There was controversy over the selection of a Tourette's sufferer as a BB7 housemate - Pete Bennett, who went on to win. Now it's rumoured that producers are looking for a transgender stripper with a split personality. And OCD.

    JUNE
    ANY DREAM WILL DO (BBC1)
    HOST: Graham Norton
WHAT TO EXPECT: Hoping to repeat the success of How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? the Beeb searches for an undiscovered talent to star in a new stage version of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. The winner will follow in the mighty footsteps of Jason Donovan, Stephen Gately and Darren Day. Oh yes.

    GREASE (ITV1)
    HOST: To be confirmed
WHAT TO EXPECT: Budding Olivia Newton Johns and John Travoltas try to convince Simon Cowell they're the ones that he wants - ooh-hoo-hoo - as he searches for a Sandy and Danny to star in this musical.

    AUGUST
    THE X FACTOR (ITV)
    HOST: Kate Thornton
WHAT TO EXPECT: Will series three winner Leona already have faded into obscurity by the time Sharon, Louis and Simon return to unearth the latent talent bubbling in the next batch of mostly deluded pop wannabes? The fourth series should prove, once more, how some folk (Louis included) will do anything to get on the telly.

    OCTOBER
    STRICTLY COME DANCING (BBC1)
HOSTS: Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly
WHAT TO EXPECT: More stars of sports, soaps and screen try not to fumble their foxtrots in the fifth series of this hit show. Likely to prove a huge ratings success, despite Brucie's jokes.

    NOVEMBER
I'M A CELEBRITY... GET ME OUT OF HERE! (ITV1)
    HOSTS: Ant and Dec
WHAT TO EXPECT: More celebrity has-beens try to remind us of their glory days by eating Witchetty grubs and kangaroo testicles while roughing it in the Outback. Compelling viewing for throwing up gems like David Gest and for contestants throwing wobblers (Jan Leeming).

A NEW YEAR brings new TV schedules and 2007 looks packed full of original drama, celebrity reality shows and the return of a few old favourites.

    Dancing on Ice
    ITV1: January

Ice dancing duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are back to train a new bunch of celebrities in the rink.

The 10 celebrities, yet to be named, will be teamed with professionals and attempt to dazzle the judges with their skating skills and win the public votes.

Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby present the show as our celebrity skaters compete to follow in the ice tracks of last year’s winner Gaynor Faye.

    SKATELY COME DANCING

THE 11 celebrities with skate expectations for ITV reality show Dancing on Ice have been revealed.

The latest series will see TV stars Ulrika Jonsson, Kay Burley and Phil Gayle vie for victory against singers Stephen Gately, Duncan James and Lisa Scott-Lee.

Actors Emily Symons and Clare Buckfield will also pull their blades on, along with sporting stars Lee Sharpe and Kyran Bracken, while DJ Neil Fox completes the line-up.

The 11 stars, all paired up with professional skaters, have been training for weeks - and rivalry is already said to be growing between former colleagues Ulrika and Kay.

An insider said: "When Ulrika started out she was the PA in the newsroom Kay worked in.

"Ulrika was way down the pecking order, so now she's desperate to prove she's better on the ice than Kay, who used to boss her about. It will be interesting to see how they get on.

"It might look glamorous, but the learning process is tougher than they could have imagined."

Most of the stars have suffered from motion sickness, bruised ribs and sore knees as they struggle to emulate coaches Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean.

Dan is skating with Emily Symmons. Gaynor just mentioned it on This Morning. Phillip also said it started on the 20th. Well it was the 20th in his diary and he should know since he is hosting it. Though Fern thought it was the 13th.

Gaynor has got an ice bum

LAST year’s Dancing On Ice winner Gaynor Faye says the show’s rigorous skating routines gave her a “pert bottom.”

The ex-Corrie star, 35, said: “I wanted to get a pert dancer’s bottom from the show and I succeeded thanks to the exercises my skating partner Daniel Whiston worked out for me.

“At first I wore very long skirts to hide my bum while all the other girls had short skirts. After the exercises my skirts went up and up.”

Gaynor has maintained her trim figure and rear with the help of DVD Fit Friends, which she made with Daniel.

And looking forward to the second series of Dancing On Ice, which begins on January 20, she added: “I want to do it again!”

UTV WIN BATTLE OF THE BOX

UTV is winning the ratings war against the BBC, it was claimed yesterday.

Broadcasting Audience Research Board figures showed the station had eight of the Top 10 programmes last year.

The Beeb is way ahead with locally-produced programming, but it was UTV's national network shows which pulled in the most viewers.

The figures exclude the World Cup coverage and the Christmas and New Year's audience figures.

The Top 10 rated TV shows were: 1. Coronation Street (UTV) 2. Emmerdale (UTV) 3. X Factor (UTV) 4. Eastenders (BBC) 5. I'm a Celebrity... (UTV) 6. Heartbeat (UTV) 7. Dancing on Ice - The Skate Off (UTV) 8. Strictly Come Dancing (BBC) 9. Soapstar Superstar (UTV) 10. The Royal (UTV).

Dancing On Ice – The Tour will be hosted by Andi Peters (a former contestant who has decided to take a slightly less hazardous role in the live format). He will be joined by amongst others, returning contestants Bonnie Langford who made it through to last year’s final and actor Stefan Booth. Aussie models Lara Bingle and Jake Wall will also take part following their success on the Australian version of Dancing On Ice last year.

The judging panel from the TV show will be rink-side to critique the performances each night. Olympic gold medal winner Robin Cousins will head the panel of ice judges, he is joined by Nicky Slater, Karen Barber and Jason ‘Mr Nasty’ Gardiner.

Judging will be a truly interactive experience and replicate the format of the TV show. Each night of the tour the competing celebrities will perform a series of routines with their dancing partners and the arena audiences will be able to vote for their favourite couple via their mobile phones. The audience votes will be added to the scores from the TV show panel of ice judges to decide the winner.

Once the votes have been counted, the two celebrities with the highest amount of votes will join their skating partners to perform a magical finale of Torvill & Dean’s Olympic Gold medal winning routine of Bolero.
