Weak Signal Angus Transmitter

Hi,

My mum has been having trouble with Freeview signal for weeks now. DigitalUK says there is possible weak signal on the Angus transmitter which would make sense. Is there any way of finding out what is happening and how long it is expected to go on for?

It's good to know that it is not her equipment but it's not exactly very comprehensive information that's provided.

No faults or planned works currently shown for Angus (Mon 20th July 2015) http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/help_and_advice/engineering_works ... quite possible that there may have been some last week?

The BBC muxes in particular are designed so that everything is fully duplicated and only work on the main antennas / feeders / combiners that necessitated Reserve antenna working might cause a very slightly reduced radiated power... but not by a lot (unless viewing at the extreme fringes of transmitter coverage). Occasionally they have brief periods (minutes) where they need to reduce signals significantly while men climb past the reserve to get to the main antennas to work (that depends on the RF shielding design and RF safety measurements and varies from site to site). They avoid this if at all possible though!

To be having trouble for weeks suggests to me that her aerial system is borderline (in)sufficient for the location... and may be showing signs of old age and or need some TLC. Or some other factor affecting reception - trees, building works, scaffolding etc.,. Especially if it is still happening today.

10-12 years is typical life for aerials and cabling outside... but a slightly poorly made TV aerial plug can cause problems and a quick clean up/remake of connections often works wonders.

** You can prove an aerial is too 'borderline' by inserting a 6dB attenuator in the connecting cable to drop the signal level by that amount. If the TV signal is till good then the aerial should provide good reception even if normal maintenance work is being done on the transmitter. If pictures are breaking up or lost altogether then.......
