I've liked k-pop for about a year now, I love it, it is difficult to get into it, just start with the big groups like girls generation, shinee, bigbang and 2ne1.
Also, I'd recommend going to allkpop.com, and then going on the forums, that's where I first started and it helped so much!

I've liked K-Pop for probably years, not really a fan of Gangnam Style though, it was ok for a while but it's way too novelty.

I've been a fan for about two years right now. Honestly, music is not the main reason, but rather the good looking girls; I only follow Korean girl groups. Every now and then they produce a good song, but mostly the music is a generic clone of American music.

However, I think I have learned a lot about Korean culture thanks to following the music industry, what the differences are to the Western music industry, how the fans react to their idols, what the role of their idols is in their society, etc.

Not a fan, but I'm surprised by their commitment, dedication and perfection. Not only in K-Pop, but in classical music also they are becoming as good as Chinese / Japanese classical musicians.

I love K-Pop, have done for a year or two now.

Gangnam Style is good enough but the thing that annoys me most about it doing so well is people will probably think all K-Pop is like it, just a joke. But there are amazing girl groups such as 2NE1 and Girls Generation who are capable of pop songs that Girls Aloud or Sugababes would be proud to call their own.

2NE1 are my favourite K-Pop act, these two songs are pop perfection:

I like it more than western pop tbh. Most of the popular groups have had years of training and when they put on live shows they look incredible. The music while derivate of Western pop/Hip Hop can be very catchy and fun. Big name US producers I like work with some of the top groups as well such as Will.I.Am and Teddy Riley for 2NE1 and Girls Generation.

Start with the big names like the two girl groups mentioned above, BigBang, Super Junior, Kara, Shinee, Wonder Girls, Block B etc. Solo artists like Rain, BOA, Ailee are worth a look. Most of their big songs are on youtube so if you look around for abit you should find something to like if your interested in kpop. Check out some of their appearances on Korean variety/talk shows as well. The artists are expected to go on these and do a turn, such as tell daft stories, dance round like fools ie be entertaining. Loads of these things are then subbed by English speaking fans and stuck on youtube. 2NE1tv is a fun reality show about how that band made it and the work they put in, all of that is subbed and on youtube as well.

Downsides - Even the big groups release some absolute shite as singles. It is pop I guess but some groups sell singles whatever crap they put out and the labels take advantage of this. Most of the big names hardcore fanbases are mental. You think Bielbers and One Directioners are bad you ain't seen nothing like Super Junior fans declare war on anything that they decide has looked at the band funny. They tend to pick one group such as Girls Generation then just trash everything else. alkpop forums are a good example of this.

Theres cultural differences too, alot the really big names are not supposed to date anyone. If they are even seen in a picture with the opposite sex its a huge scandal and the fanbases go mental, google "IU/eunhyuk scandal" its so daft its unbelievable. Not every group is like this though, Seungri from BigBang would probably **** anything with a pulse and his fans don't care. Some questionable stuff regarding Koreans perceptions of black people too, from alot of the big name acts as well. Which is depressing if you look into it.

tldr - version If you like fun, catchy pop there is loads of it in kpop and its far more accessible than jpop. There is loads of dross to wade through and a bunch of mental fans though.
