They certianly have! 40 years ago national commercial radio didn't exist. And the blandness of its nature, which is not universal, is because its not been allowed to evolve naturally, but has always been over regulated.
Congratulations on your attempt to rewrite history, but what you claim is patently wrong, as mikw has pointed out, and as would be apparent if you followwed the evolution of many of the stations that have been swallowed up by the big operators who who gone on to produce an homogenised network of identikit stations devoid of any uniqueness. Purely a commercial decision, nothing to do with regulation.
And who do the 5 Live presenters and producers work for?
The BBC. But I fail to see how that makes the BBC out of touch. The whole incident just showed the naivety of the presenters thinking RATM would censor themselves. If they were out of touch they would never have had them on in the first place and been accused of being out of touch with the 'yoof'.

No reply from Reb?
As you quite rightly say, nothing to do with regulation.
RATM did do as they were asked to a certain point, Zack cleaned up the line in question a number of times, dropping the expletive, instead saying ".... I won't do what you tell me" repeatedly.
5 Live might have been wise to cash in their chips and fade it at that point!

Admission of being wrong by any chance?
how does anyone acttually know first when a swear word is a swear word ?- only cos someone said so - and how did they know ?
defining swear words is the biggest PC con ever
its a free country and kids and adults use them in equal measure
better ways of saying something - if you are a linguistic snob perhaps !
