Scotland v England On SS1HD & SS5HD - Why?

Just curious as to why the game was on two different sports channels.

Do you not need the full Sports package to receive Sky Sports 5? If so, would everyone who has SS5 not have Sky Sports 1?
Seems a little strange.

It was an identical broadcast, BTW.
I initially wondered whether one would have a more Scottish-focussed panel and the other English, but this wasn't the case.

Was on ITV as well, but as their presenters and commentators are utter morons I watched it on SS5

that's due to a quirk in the contracts.
sky have the rights for scotland home games.
ITV have the rights for england away games (and maybe home games too?)

so in this instance both have the rights to show the game.

Correct, they have the rights to all England games.

Which is fine, but still doesn't account for why Sky decided to put it on SS1 AND 5.

So Sky was technically showing a 'Scotland' vs England game and ITV was showing an 'England' vs Scotland game! They just happened to be the same thing!

Nope, ITV were showing a Scotland vs England game, technically (you used it first), there was no England vs Scotland game!!

ITV and STV typically carried two seperate biased commentries last night, north and south of the border.

Sky on the other hand were in head-to-head competion with a better watched terrestrial rival for the same programme, which doesn't happen very often, so needed every advantage they could come by. This likely explains the reasoning behind showing the game on more than one Sports channel.

Do you mean because it was a Scotland home game and an England away game?

I'm curious as to what the Sky Sports pundits thought of it, since both the ITV pundits and BBC Sports journalists were full of praise for England's performance. Scotland weren't really in the game much.

Yes, a very good point, and one which this thread has conveniently deviated from!

Start another one and maybe people will realise that it needs answering!
It will most likely get merged with this one later anyway!

how can anyone answer it apart from sky themselves?
if the PhilH36 wants to know then maybe he should contact sky direct and ask.

    Good old Sky

They show Dutch League, Champions League, Internationals behind the poor red button with very poor SD quality in this day and age but show Scotland v England game on 2 different HD channels! you could not make that up :D

Instead using 2 HD channels for same game, they should be using all their 7 HD channels for all the games they show in SD.
