One Day
Read a few reviews today and as I expected it's looking a bit average.
Shame really as the book is really entertaining, I did wonder if the one day per year aspect would translate well.
I wasn't encouraged after seeing the trailer, it was poorly put together and made the film look dated.
Ah well.

I'm not usually put off by reviews but I think because I have such strong images in my head from the book that the so-so reactions are really giving me a bad feeling.
So true, and for me...being of a similar age to the characters when i was at uni i dont want to dilute those images...if you know what i mean?
I'm the same, probably one of the reasons I liked the book so much was that I'm of a similar age to the characters, went to Uni at about the same time that they did etc, and everything in the book rang so true based on my own experiences.
I'm unsure about seeing the film as I suspect that it won't capture the authentic feel of the times in the same way.
I think it was a shame to cast a non-British actress as the female lead. I've nothing againest Hathers, just such a shame they couldn't have given a Brit a chance when the character is so inherently Northern.
I would say to just forget about the book (okay I know that's hard but you know what I mean). Just imagine you're watching it as a movie alone, rather than a copy from the book (if that makes sence )
Enjoy though
thats what i meant...you said it so much more eloquently though
I've just said pretty much the same thing in the Books forum. Hathaway is nothing like the Emma in the book. I've got nothing against her an actress but it has put me off of seeing the film. She's just not Emma. Dexter looks to have been perfectly cast though.
The reviews for the film have been rather scathing. Many really do not like the message the film sends out to the more impressionable audience.
I'm repeating what I said in the Books forum but have to say it here - I absolutely love the poster for the movie but I have a feeling it will be the best thing about it.
However. I do adore Anne Hathaway (total lifelong girl-crush), apparently rubbish Yorkshire accent and all... and Edinburgh Uni is meant to be a big part of it, which is where I studied... so now I'm quite torn!
What's the message they say it gives out? That you'll always end up with the one that got away?
Renee Zellweger got slated when she landed the lead in BJ, but she ended up being fantastic in the role.
I'm gonna keep an open mind until I've seen it.
(Although I do think that Anne Hathaway is slightly over-rated at times).
I'm following your lead Marps
I can only hope its half as good.
Lol no, why would it? Think of how many people LOVE "the notebook".
I got the book today
apparently she has watched a lot of Emmerdale.
That sounds good. I'll look forward to seeing it
Its translated really well, and thankfully they didn't change the end.
Emmas accent did change a bit, but it says in the book that she only occasionally slips back into yorkshire so it went well.
boyfriend cried. thats always a good sign!
Pros
1. Jim Sturgess played Dexter believably as a total prick
2. Rafe Spall - in my opinion, he stole the show
3. Patricia Clarkson - perfectly cast
4. It was relatively true to the book
Cons
1. Anne Hathaway - not only her accent, I just didn't completely buy her as Emma.
2. It cut out
3. It just wasn't as good overall as the book
Saying that, it did make me cry once -
Copying my post from the Books forum:
I was very vague because I didn't want to ruin it for those who haven't read the book and lazy because I didn't know how to use the spoiler tags. Sussed it now:
I am not at all surprised. He's a wonderful actor.
That whole situation made me cry when I read the book. I loved that relationship.
