Don't want to sound callous but if you smoke so heavily for so many years that's what's likely to happen...
My Grandmother smoked 60 a day for nigh on 50 years and died of senile dementia at 104.
A friend from school has never, ever smoked, but has recently been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
So, nothing is actually very 'likely'.
But would you say the same if this was a heavy drinker diagnosed with cirrhosis?
Or a lifelong sunbather with skin cancer?
Or somebody who gets their rocks off by sky diving but is now a paraplegic when the parachute cord snaps?
Or a childless woman (by choice) who has never breastfed and contracts breast cancer?
Or a promiscuous woman who contracts cervical cancer?
Or a drug addict who contracts HIV?
Or do you save your snide, sneery comments just for smokers battling lung cancer?
O/T*Might be wrong* but looking at your name, I am making a massive assumption about you...but I think I used to go to a market near you every week, a market that moved indoors a few years ago.;-) I'm probably very wrong, so ingnore this - lol!
Not wrong at all Daisy
As I type this looking at Sunnybrow Park the other side of Hyde Road I live literally two mins from there
Small world 😄
It depends on how far it's got. If it has gone too far I'm afraid there is not much hope of a recovery.
I had early stages of lung cancer 6 years ago. They removed part of my lung, and cross fingers I'm still OK. Mine was due to smoking which fortunately I had given up some years previous to the cancer being discovered. When I was young we didn't have all the information there is nowadays, and when I see youngsters smoking to-day, I think "I just wish you'd stop".
I am one of the lucky ones, and I really wish her all the luck in the world and that the specialists have caught it time.
Oh bless you. long may you remain healthy. It truly is a devestating thing to hear and my goodness, how on earth someone can be strong and optimistic whilst constantly feeling ill is inspirational beyond words.
You rightly point out how limited information was years ago. That is something those who judge should bear in mind. As a child I can remember buying cigarettes for my dad. All you had to do was say "My dad wants 20 Cadets" (whatever happened to that brand?) and you could have them. Everyone knew they were not good for you, but no one really knew on what scale. Kids today are meant to be the most intelligent, you wouldn't think so when the information they have is so thorough yet still they decide to smoke. It's upsetting.
Best wishes and I hope your health is with you for many years to come.
I am too, devastated to hear this news. It most likely explains why they didn't do another Royle Family special in December 2013.
It's very saddening reading all she has been through, with retina and bladder cancer, depression and alcoholism and a suicide attempt - you would never think it when seeing her on tv.
I wish her all the best in her recovery, let's hope the prognosis isn't as bad as we would imagine. xxx
And yes, just for the record, a friends mum is battling lung cancer currently and has never smoked in her life. Obviously smoking increases those chances but Caroline has openly said she has given up.
Why don't we all just show our support instead of being insensitive?
Sad news as people have said, the comment on the smoking thing that has been said is difficult to be honest don't we all wish the god damn things had not being used. I know when you hear of people who have never smoked in their lives & still get this awful thing All the best to her such a shame:(.
If you think Jason C's comments were tasteless have a look on the other thread started earlier on in I believe the uk tv programmes sections
A real nasty piece of work who speculates her problems with booze led to the breakdown of her marriage and her heavy smoking
As none of us were privy to that it's totally out of order to mud sling in that way
For the detractors, she was born with eye cancer and it has been reported that the bladder and lung cancer are both connected to this. Her brother has had cancer too. It is a genetic form. With or without smoking, she was very high risk.
Caroline has been through so much and yet has used her remarkable talents to entertain and make people laugh. She has also been happy to send herself up. I once read that she has an IQ of 170, which can be a blessing and a curse.
As for prognosis, it really does depend. We all know that lung cancer is one of the worst. We have a friend who has just been diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer and her prognosis is poor. However, someone else we know had a lung removed 20 years ago and although she has had recurrences elsewhere, her cancer is incurable but highly treatable and she's currently in remission.
Hoping Caroline does really well in response to treatment.

The internet is a safe place for nasty, unworthy people to dwell. They can be nasty and cruel and downright disrespectful because we don't know them. I don't know if they're trying to be clever or controversial, but they're just pointless, egotistic ********s who think they know best. It saddens me though, and by reading your posts, you clearly feel the same. Caroline has never particularly been my favourite celebrity, but I don't pay much attention to all the gossip and news stories surrounding celebrity lifestyles. If she had problems that she found hard to deal with then that is really sad and people need to understand how easy it is for people to just "snap" into a dark abyss. What Caroline is going through now though is sheer hell, and while I don't know her personally, and while I wasn't a fan of her work personally, you have to commend her for bringing joy into the lives of people who do enjoy what she does. I really really hope she wins this fight. Like her work or not, she is a valued female comedy and drama writer who brings smiles to those who like her work.
Sad news. I really hope Caroline is one of the lucky ones who beats this. Sadly I lost my Mum to lung cancer over a year a go, my Mum never smoked either, hate it when people get accused of bringing on certain illnesses. Sadly by the time my Mum was diagnoised it had already spread to her bones. I wish Caroline well.
Very sad news. I hope she manages to make a fully recovery. She's brilliant on Gogglebox and can't believe she's been doing it whilst being so unwell. Although this could explain her unannounced disappearance halfway through series 2.

I don't understand some of the comments. For those making the snide judgmental comments, just remember your time will come sooner or later as well, as is the case for all of us.
Obviously a lot of health problems can be lifestyle related, but a lot of the time your genetics will determine things without you having a say in the matter.
Medicine despite some amazing achievements is still a dark art and so much of it is not understood very well at all
Like you I had a step grandfather who was a heavy chain smoker when younger and I never saw him without a pipe, he was also heavy drinker. He lived until 102 and died officially of 'old age' so you just never know how it's going to turn out.
Having lost my own mother 20 odd years ago with the same Godawful disease, my thoughts and sympathy are with her. Fabulous contemporary writer and comedian. The sad fact is that in the years since my Mother died (1993), little or no advancement has been made in the treatment of LC, yet there have been major advances in other forms. Lets hope this new treatment on the horizon isn`t yet another false dawn. Apparently clinical trials are due to start. Fingers crossed.

Yes she has always struck me as one of those incredibly intelligent, creative people who often struggle with a form of depression. With the genius often comes the torment.
I really admire her and wish her well with this hideously awful illness. I pray for the day they find a cure for cancer.
I lost my father (a non-smoker) to this horrible disease so I have seen the devastation it causes first hand. Caroline seems to be a fighter, overcoming disease and personal demons in the past. Fortunately, it seems like the treatment of lung cancer has progressed enormously since my father passed away so, hopefully, her chances of recovery are good. A very funny lady. I adore her Gogglebox commentary too!

And yet....
Best wishes to Caroline, and anyone else battling this b*strd disease.

A fabulous comedian and actress- I wish her all the best in living with this illness.
And yet you manage to.
She's been given a devastating diagnosis, she doesn't need finger wagging.

Well said. Sometimes I genuinely hate people on here.
Why don't we all just show our support instead of being insensitive?
Good luck Caroline.
