My brother has given me his laptop to try to repair but I have no idea what I'm doing. It's an Asus X53U on Windows 7.
When I turn it on it goes straight to the Advanced Boot Options menu and none of the options can be selected.

The options are selected using the arrow keys on your keyboard. Do you mean that the highlighted option is not changing when you press these keys? Can you try plugging in a USB keyboard to see if that will work?
The options can be highlighted using the arrow keys but pressing enter does nothing.
I have asked him and he said the H and 'another one' so it's possible that the other is the enter key. If I can find an external keyboard somewhere I will try that, but I don't think I have one.
Now it goes straight to Windows Boot Manager when I start it up, asking me to choose an operating system. Windows 7 is the only option, but my brother told me his brother-in-law tried to fix it by trying to install Windows 8. If I press the escape key (to cancel) to screen goes back to Windows Boot Manager again.
When I choose Windows 7 from the menu I get 'Starting Windows', 'Setup is starting services', 'Setup is applying system settings' and/or 'Setup is preparing your computer for first use' - there's a different combination each time - and then it eventually brings me to the desktop.
A few command prompts come up and disappear, a dialog box with the title 'System Preparation Tool 3.14' comes up and a hardware installation box appears in the icon tray, which finishes installing some hardware.
It seems to work after all that. I can't connect to the Internet though because the wireless key on the keyboard doesn't work and the one I've borrowed doesn't have one.
Edit: now the command prompts/dialog box etc. don't appear when I restart.
