Thought this would make a fun read for some here.

From http://www.imdb.com/news/ni58136045: The full list of top 20 pirated movies of the year ranked by number of downloads (along with studio and original theatrical release date) made by torrent users worldwide in 2014:

2. Frozen - 29.919 million (Disney, Nov. 27, 2013)
3. RoboCop - 29.879 million (note: this combines the figures of two releases: MGM, Feb. 12, 2014 and Orion, July 17, 1987)
4. Gravity - 29.357 million (Warner Bros., Oct. 4, 2013)

12. American Hustle - 23.143 million (Sony/Columbia, Dec. 13, 2013)
13. 300: Rise of an Empire - 23.096 million (Warner Bros., March 7, 2014)

I thought The Expendales would of been on the list, as i remember it leaked online about a month or so before it's cinema release.

Likewise. There are a few on the list I would like to see but I have just not had the chance to see any of them.

    Hmm, interesting.

Thing is, when and what was being downloaded? Those dreadful cam-rips you see knocking about at release time, dismal screeners, early work print etc? I imagine the majority comes from when the BR/DVD is made available - then it becomes something of a free-for-all from what I'm told (*cough*).

As far as I know, Excipio logs/monitors IP addresses - including some VPN accounts* - per title, regardless of its media format (screeners, camrips, etc.), within a period of time in their data collection system.

*It's usually a) your ISP reveals your online activities, regardless of you using a VPN account, or b) your VPN provider sells data to companies like Excipio.

That's as much as I know. Others will probably know a lot more.

If they had waited until the year had ended to compile that list, then The Interview would surely be in there somewhere. Also, the screener version of Fury leaked after the Sony hack is conspicuously absent.

Other leaked pre-release titles didn't show up in their lists either. So far:

    The Interview
    Fury
    Hulk
    The Expendables 3
    Annie
    Mr Turner
    Still Alice
To Write Love on Her Arms

I suspect they're not counting those. Who knows?

Even if they are free to view, there isn't much there that I would be tempted to watch. eg I gave up on the Hobbit trilogy after enduring the first film. I just seem to have lost interest in new films. I haven't been to a cinema since 2012. Looks like it's terminal!
