Does anyone know if Virgin Mobile phones are locked to the Virgin / one2one network? I want to by a tri band phone from Virgin but put and Orange or BTCellnet SIM in it when I go to the States.

Thanks

They might be locked when you buy them, but since you are buying the phone outright and they do not recoup the cost through a monthly subscription I've heard they are quite happy to give out unlock codes if requested to do so. I'd give them a ring and ask.

    Cheers, James.

As JT said, they are locked to Virgin, but they will unlock it for free.

The slightly older Virgin Mobile phones (like mine) are not locked to Virgin Mobile, but they changed this recently (at the beginning of the year i think)

    Take a look at http://www.virginmobile.com/mobile/faq/phones_accessories_service.html#another_sim

and this explains how to get your phone unlocked

BT Cellnet never used to lock their phones either, but have started to do so on some newer models.

But you can buy a lead for £10 and unlock them yourself (Most Nokia's, plus few others) send tones, & graphics.

Why would you want to put an Orange or Cellnet SIM when in the USA?

Orange charge the same for making a call from the USA to the UK as Virgin.

All use the same available USA networks.

Note: One2One is the only network to allow Pre-Pay phones to Roam.
