Your Opinion On The Blocked Websites From UK

If anyone doesn't know dozens of websites have now been blocked from many UK servers by The High Courts. Even though there is one site that I use to go on a few years ago to listen to music I really think it's been a good idea as people's computers were getting lots of viruses and breaking. It has also reduced the number of junk email on MSN Hotmail. There were people getting into trouble on some of those websites and something had to get done about it. It may have made the internet a bit safer for UK but there are still lots of bad website out there.

I don't care really as anyone who wants to use them knows the way around the blocks anyway

There are no blocked sites for the vast majority of web users in the UK, censorship by unelected judges should not be tolerated.

High courts aren't even the only problem. There is the Internet Watch Foundation that doesn't answer to the courts.

My ISP (BT) blocks a few torrent sites but it's very easy to get around it. I don't use them much anyway because I do feel uneasy about illegally downloading stuff I know I should pay for but maybe I'd be more inclined to visit the cinema more regularly if my local multiplex showed anything more interesting than comic book adaptations and romcoms and didn't charge me a king's ransom for a handful of nachos and a bottle of Coke.

Having said that a subscription to Netflix for films and Spotify for music is pretty much peanuts so it's pretty cheap to get your entertainments legally.

My thoughts are if I want to connect to one of them I'll need to spend a few seconds connecting to my VPN to get round the block. And that I thought government censorship only existed in places like Iran and China.

Just download an add on if you're on google chrome. ZenMate is the one I use and nothing appears to be blocked right now.

My opinion is the government should be concentrating their supposed limited resources on other more important things than blocking torrent sites. How about terrorism, kiddy porn, etc, etc.

Well to be fair they are only blocking ones that host pirated films in many ways no different to shutting down Dodgy Dave and his knocked off DVD's.

That said when Dodgy Dave goes down there is always Knock Off Nigel to take his place or you just have to find out what street corner or pub Dave has moved to

Really? I'd love to read that source. Can you link to it please?

May be wrong, but think you have misunderstood the reason for those websites being blocked. It has nothing to do with them breaking computers by giving them viruses, the reason is an attempt to cut piracy.

Also not sure what you mean by reducing junk email as it's not really necessary to provide an email address on those websites.

As others have said, if you still want to access these websites, there are ways around the blocks.

Not blocked here, but that is one advantage of using a small ISP. Saying that I needed to download a version of windows 7 on someones BT connection via pirate bay and done it easily enough, the website was a bit slow mind you, but did the job.

Before anyone says, OEM version for laptop where the drive had gone belly up. The laptop took it as legal and MS activated it

Reporters Without Borders now classes the UK (and the USA too) as, "Enemies of the internet". The same catergory the likes of Iran, China, North Korea and Saudi Arabia fall under. Pretty disgraceful really.

I think it's great that the courts are compelling ISPs to block these very bad websites and they should rest assured that, regardless of what anybody says, the blocks are doing their job perfectly so there's no need to pursue the matter any further.

    *EDIT*

Also, some stuff about how the golden age of yadda yadda yadda....

I should be allowed to watch what I want to do I will just get around the blocks . It won't stop most people from watching films and TV shows .

Release films all over the world at roughly the same time and that would help . Some films we get 1 or 2 months after the u.s and I don't want to wait .

I don't get it, how are they paying for all those servers and all that bandwidth?

Of course this should in no way be seen as encouraging non BT users to experiment - all the sites listed are very bad, and possibly cause cooties. Fortunately as a BT user I'm totally protected from them

    oh yes

If you're talking about torrent sites, how exactly is the internet safer by blocking them?

Theory is that it'll convert to a pay service once there are sufficient users.

There really isn't such a thing as a fully blocked site; there are plenty of ways of viewing them and none of them take much time or effort.

All 'blocking' really achieves is stopping those accessing a site that they probably didn't really want to access anyway.
