The costumes look very "Babylon 5"-ish. The ep looks
like a classic space opera-which is good in my book.

Yeah. I remember RTD avoiding space stories that
didn't feature humans because he thought the
non-fan audience wouldn't be interested in them.
Moffat's given us at least two such stories-"The Doctor's
Wife" and "The Girl Who Waited"- and I'm pleased he's
brought this aspect of the show back (perhaps Moffat
thought after several years of DW, the causal viewer
wouldn't mind the occasional "No humans" story).

well i've seen comments from @DrWhoOnline saying they loved it and @BlogtorWho saying they thought it wasn't very good, so it'll be interesting to see the proper reviews for this. :p

The trailer didn't really grab me, if I'm honest.

I'm really looking forward to this one. I have waited for an episode with an alien world and a truly alien civilization since the series returned in 2005. And the tile is very Tom Baker era. :D

"Clara makes a reference to Jenna-Louise Coleman" - I'm very interested in that one, maybe she mentions her character on Emmerdale or something?

I'm guessing the relation that is mentioned is River, I do think it's important to acknowledge that the Doctor is still a married man. It'd be a far bigger deal if Susan were mentioned (as her fate is unknown), and that spoiler mentions it as a casual thing. Technically, Amy and Rory are relatives of the Doctor as well, so it might just be them.

I do have to say this seems like one of the more out-there episodes of the new series - not a good one for new viewers, I wouldn't think. I agree that it seems very much classic-series style, which is no bad thing... could go either way! :)

    Hmm...

This episode is supposed to share some elements with "Father's Day", so maybe it'll have something to do with Young!Clara. And maybe that day in 2005 that wasn't.good for everyone will be the day she lost her gran, which may tie into the leaf?

Maybe this will lead the Doctor to thinking about his own grandaughter?

“Come on then, take mine, take my ********. But I hope you’ve got a big appetite because I have lived a long life and I have seen few things.”

I'm guessing that blanked out bit is "memories".

Couldn't help but get a "Susan," vibe from that - and what with the 50th approaching, wouldn't it be great if Clara somehow turned out to be Susan? The Doctor's latest companion being his very first companion.

Ok, that's just a total fanboy leap, I know. But still.

Eew, not really. They've flirted like there's tomorrow and actually kissed!

    Aha, good point!

But then I recall that the whole reason Susan was made the Doctor's granddaughter in the original pilot was because the BBC considered it inappropriate for an unrelated schoolgirl to be travelling around with an elderly man for no reason. So if you wanted to subvert that old notion, then....

....actually, no I can't go there. You're right, bad idea! :p

It says "Published March 31, 2013" so I doubt it.

'Rings' orbits a flaw that risks swallowing up all the good of the episode: an under-developed story that leads to a muddled ending.

    3/5 Stars

I do have other reservations about The Rings of Akhaten, but will save them for the RT review after transmission. Don’t let me put you off. On balance, this is an ambitious, mildly creepy and slightly preposterous first stab at Who from Luther creator Neil Cross. Much to enjoy!

My beef is that Rings is actually Neils SECOND script, not his first. Hide was his first.

Review by Doctor Who Online gives the episode 8/10.
We’re also given the perfect opportunity for Jenna-Louise Coleman to shine on her own terms, removing The Doctor from the equation so we can can witness her first exposure to the universe though Clara’s eyes. Matt Smith continues to - impossibly - keep getting better at simply being the Doctor, and is given plenty of time to shine in this episode, too.

Also lists five things to look out for:
    1) The Doctor is a fan of The Beano.

    2) Time isn’t made of strawberries.

    3) Clara’s leaf is the ‘most important leaf in human history’.

    4) The Doctor gets to imitate a certain famous archaeologist.

    5) Reference is made to the Doctor’s first incarnation.
