Problems with receiving and sending emails on Windows 8 App

Hi all,
I have recently been unable to receive or send any emails via my Windows Mail app (tile) I am using Windows 8. I have not made any changes to the settings on my laptop and yesterday it was working fine.
The error message that I get everytime I try to send an email is: "There's a problem sending messages from (email) at the moment. Check with your provider".
I can access and use my email normally by signing in on the web and using the Outlook option there, but the app is not connecting at all. does anyone know why that might be?
