Part of his / her duty is to leave parcels in a safe place. You have provided this place by leaving access open to them, and it's likely they have assumed it's what you want since you have set it up to appear that way. They do not come across as weird, but two young girls who leave their door unlocked while at times sleeping naked doesn't sound terribly sensible. I have had the postman knock many times, and I can barely get to the door before he has already moved on, it's not specific to your guy being back down the stairs before you can speak to him. If you opt not to lock your door, then you bear the burden of what others do as a result.

Maybe the OP leaves their door unlocked as it is preferable to the postie lifting their flap and emptying his load into their box.

I would get a sign that says Beware Of The Dog and put a dog bowl outside your bedroom door and some dog toys.

If we are not at home, our postwoam goes out of her way to leave a parcel in our back garden shed, or if its locked our dog kennel. Baring in mind she has to walk around our house and reach over our back gate to unlock it .

She'll also leave a card clearly stsying where it has been left, if it needs a signature she'll leave it into one of our neighbours.

You can change that if you want.

I've also got a sign up for couriers not to leave parcels/packets in a 'safe place' (there is no such place around here) or with neighbours.

And anyway, I don't want to bother neighbours with my post.

It seems like he can't win... So what do you want then, for the postman to leave the parcels outside or for them to be inside? Because it seems like you want neither!

And no, its not normal for you to just leave you door unlocked all the time. I mean you why would you sleep with the door unlocked!?

Just complain about the recorded delivery thing if you that concerned, what else do you think we could offer? Talk to him for you...

Just maybe put a sign up to say knock first or something, its not that hard to come up with some options, is it? ;-)

I'm really shocked by how many people are thinking it's ok for a postman (or anyone) to let himself into your house.

I'd find it completely unacceptable. How dare he walk in your home OP!

You should not have to lock your door to stop people walking in. Maybe to stop burglars, but isn't it a given that non-criminals will knock and wait for the door to be answered, especially professional people who are not there on a social visit?

If ANYONE came into my house uninvited, I would be furious; even friends and family. If a postman did it, I would lodge a formal complaint.

And, as for putting a sign up to ask him to knock first - you shouldn't have to do that either. Postmen are supposed to knock anyway, and get a signature on recorded or special delivery items.

If I were you OP, I would ring the local delivery office and complain formally.

Thanks for your contribution. Your comment speaks volumes about you too. :)

The front door to my flat has no latch - it does not lock automatically when you shut it you need to physically lock it with a key or it is unlocked. If I have the door locked when I am up and someone knocks it is always very annoying as I have to find my key before I open the door.

Although it is a student property it doesn't look like one, it is in a row of residential houses/flats. There is no reason to assume it is a student property.

The OP has stated that the area where they live is full of flats converted from houses and there is no way of knowing it's just a "house share" from the outside.

I believe they could be students and house sharing and therefore do not own the property outright.

Therefore to me, it sounds like the postman may think that it's a house that has been converted into separate flats (or even bedsits) and may NOT know it's just a house OR they may have been asked by previous tenants to leave parcels inside.

The OP admits that she and her flatmates are too lazy to lock the door.

So they can either get out of bed and tell the postie to stop doing it, leave a note for the postie asking them not to do it (and then advertise the fact they never bloody lock the door) or grow up a bit and take some responsibility and lock it. or put locks on their own rooms.

Leaving a front door unlocked these days is just being stupid and irresponsible. If the OP is flat sharing and something happens no letting agency will touch them with a barge pole ever again.

I once had a marathon of watching seasons 1-6 of One Tree Hill over a period of 3 or 4 months... loved it. I moved house half way through 6 over 2 years ago and never got back into it. I have the DVDs of the other seasons, just need to find time to watch it... I don't care if I get ripped for admitting that :D

Locking the door is a hassle as well we tend to jut do it at night or if we're all out.

You think locking a door with a key is a hassle? Seriously? :o It's effortless, and takes a matter of seconds!

I don't understand why anyone would leave their front door unlocked - it's just asking for trouble.

It is a house which has been made into 3 flats, each with their own entrance. Until a couple months or so back he was delivering all our post to the wrong flat - we only realised this when the tenant in the flat the post was getting delivered to moved out as he had been binging up our post.

I've only seen up to series 6, didn't really the series much after the time jump.:( Loved series 1 - 4 though :) why being a fan of anything leads to being mocked is crazy to me - so what if I like One Tree Hill it doesn't affect you or give an insight into the kind of person I am:confused:

It's usually the milkman who people (of the female persuasion) tend to have problems with.

Post-men are a bit of a turn-up for the books.

Do milkmen still exist? Everybody seems to get their milk from the supermarkets now.

I'm pretty certain this is a rented house as in my experience people are a lot more careful when it comes to their own property. I find it puzzling that OTHF is complaining about the one advantage that comes of leaving the door open - ie not having to traipse down to the PO to collect your parcel (which is the bane of my life as I work all day and my postie never delivers till late morning/afternoon) instead of worrying about the risk of unwanted intruders. Whenever I've lived in a shared house it was a cardinal sin not to lock the door every time you left and I think if these students want to live like adults they need to start acting responsibly before they get a giant wake up call, like maybe finding half their stuff has disappeared and they have absolutely no proof of a break-in, thus everyone in the house being under suspicion. Student houses are a very popular target for burglars and just because they have gotten off with this risky situation in the past doesn't mean that they will in the future ...

Yes, there's a Dairy Crest affiliated milkman who delivers to some of the elderly ladies on our road and to some in the rest of the village too.

Depends on the throughput of the door. If you have 100+ door closes a night from visitors for various people going in and out, it's better to have a door that doesn't need to be locked from the inside or outside, just unlocked from the outside.
Although it is a student property it doesn't look like one, it is in a row of residential houses/flats. There is no reason to assume it is a student property.

But, your neighbours will most likely know it is a student property. It's not difficult to spot a student a mile off, plus many neighbours are overly nosy.

I agree. ‘ Weird & creepy’ doesn’t come close to describing his outrageous behaviour.

He deserves to lose his job and face criminal prosecution, and hopefully a very lengthy jail sentence.

He's a postman, not a serial killer. At worst, he could be done for trespass. You sound like the type of person that would hang people for getting a car parking fine.

I see the problem. We've just had a new UPVC ront door fitted, and instead of the old Yale latch type lock, we now have to use a key to secure the door instead of just pushing it shut like before.

Its a bit of a chore compared to previously, but here's a tip to make it easier.
What I do, is use the key supplied with the door, put it in the lock, turn it, and lock the door, then I hang the keys in a place where they cannot be fished out the letter box.

Its a handy little thing to do, but you see, all the stuff in my house, the toaster, the TV, the autographed Stewart Lee book, the bag of French pornographic engravings, thats all my stuff, stuff I worked for and bought. That's why I keep it inside my house. The stuff I can't fit inside my house, like the cars, the lawn mower, the large crate of French pornographic engravings, I keep those locked up separately.

What I don't do is leave all my stuff unsecured then come and whine on the internet that a "creepy" man is coming into my house.

Ooh, our local burglar is a bit creepy. The other night he came into our bedroom and shone a torch in my eyes. I had to get up and give him my car keys, in the nude. Still, I saved time going back to bed, as I don't bother locking the front door.

It's a shame they are not very good at irony and sarcasm.

    Anyway.

Stick a : rolleyes : or :p smiley on the end of the post and all is clear. That's what emoticons are there for. Most of the time you don't know for sure whether people on DS are being serious or not. Me included. I can't see other poster's facial expressions. I'm not a mind reader.

See the post above, which on the other hand, is obviously sarcastic and tongue in cheek.

I live in a flat which is through a wooden gate and up some metal stairs.

The postman keeps on leaving parcels at the top of the stairs - if we are out he just leaves them there and even if we are in he is always gone by the time we get to the door. Once he actually left a parcel out on the street! Luckily one of my flatmates got it but anyone could've really...

Recently he's started coming into the flat and leaving parcels in the hallway:confused::confused: does anyone elses postman do this I think it's kind of creepy

I feel like maybe I should say something to him but I don't know what:confused:plus I've never seen him cos he literally bolts it down the stairs after knocking.

This morning he left (inside) something that had been sent recorded delivery and should've been signed for. Do you think he just forged the signature or something?

If you've never seen him then how do you know its the same person?, Posties change there rounds all the time.
