Of course it is. When I were a lad the bands that are now defined as Classic Rock, or the despicable "Dad Rock", were the Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, or Progressive, bands of their day.

surely the op used the term 'classic rock' simply to mean good old rock songs. getting bogged down and arguing over whether its a marketing term or not is pointless...just go with the idea...
by and large i dont like classic rock much. cream, hendrix, thin lizzy are artists i like most though. most of my fav rock tracks come from this side of the milennium.

That's ok until someone said that most of my list wasn't Classic Rock!
I think Pink Fairies, MC5, Mott the Hoople, Mountain, Argent, are all as Classic Rock as Blue Oyster Cult ( the OP's choice). Otherwise it's same old, same old.

I don't think anyone is getting bogged down, however there is no doubt over the last few years "Classic Rock" has very much become a marketing tool to sell the same old songs in a repackaged format.
I should sit comfortably in the target audience for Planet Rock, but I listen to it sparingly because it is almost always the same songs on repeat. Hawkwind, as an example, have released over 20 albums but anyone would think they have recorded one song, at a push two, if you listen to Planet Rock or purchase one of the numerous "Classic Rock" compliations.

back in the day ex and I stood talking to Lemmy - great music and guy -and I'd lke my Motorhead flag/banner back at Readng Rock Festival too - you know who you are....you took it from the blonde with lots of hair and the guy who looked like Jim Morrison of the Doors (I got lucky)

Thanks. Couldn't really leave Quo off the list. So many great tunes and so many great live performances, especially in the days of the 'frantic four'. One of the few bands that always gave back to their fans and are still doing so.

A lot of Rock Music in the 60s was blues or blues influenced..........I suppose that's the era I think of as Classic Rock, going into the 70s
But probably that's because that's when I was listening to it........I don't know much about post 1980 Rock. I'd stopped listening by then.
