From BBC Press Office:
BBC Radio 1 announces today that Fearne Cotton is to front the 10.00am-12.45pm, Monday to Friday show in a major shake-up of the station's weekday schedule.
Fearne, who currently presents a weekend programme on the station with Reggie Yates, will now fly solo in her new show.
Radio 1 has also confirmed that Early Breakfast presenter Greg James is heading to afternoons (1.00-4.00pm); while Dev is shifting from Weekend Breakfast to the weekday Early Breakfast Show (4.00-6.30am).
The Live Lounge continues in Fearne's new show with Radio 1 bringing more live music than ever to daytime; and lunchtimes with Greg will still be the place to go for all things movie related – but games and gaming are being added in too.
Fearne says: "I love being at Radio 1 and taking on a weekday show is a dream come true.
"Jo [Whiley] is leaving very big shoes for me to fill and it's nerve wracking. She has been a massive inspiration to me throughout my career so I have a high standard to live up to.
"The live music legacy will live on in the new show and I can't wait to get started."
Greg says: "I didn't think things could get any better when I joined Radio 1 so to move to the lunchtime slot which has had so many great names presenting it is amazing.
"And, as much as I adore my early show, it will be nice to see daylight again!"
Dev says: "This is an amazing opportunity for me to strengthen my broadcasting muscle and become a radio beast!
"It's an honour to keep the nation company in the morning and, of course, warm up for Mr Moyles!"
As a result of changes to the weekday schedule, Edith Bowman will host Weekend Breakfast (7.00-10.00am); Jo Whiley moves to weekend afternoons (1.00-4.00pm); and Reggie Yates keeps the late afternoon slot (4.00-7.00pm).
Nihal, who currently presents the weekend 1.00-4.00pm show, continues with his specialist show on the station.
Ben Cooper, Deputy Controller, Radio 1, says: "This is our first big shake-up of the weekday schedule for over five years.
"I feel it's the right time to make these changes in order to offer our listeners some exciting new programmes.
"Bringing Fearne to the daytime schedule is really thrilling for us as she has proven herself to be a great broadcaster in the time she has been at the station.
"Greg has also been a real hit with listeners since joining Radio 1 so we believe he's ready for a new slot, and Dev, who recently moved to us from BBC 1Xtra, is a star of the future."
Andy Parfitt, Controller, Radio 1, adds: "BBC Radio 1 must continue to change to connect with a new generation of audiences and this is a significant move, promoting three of our up-and-coming broadcasters into the heart of the schedule.
"We're doing this from a position of strength, we have record audience levels, delivered with major contributions by Jo and Edith and I thank them for that.
"I look forward to a fresh sound to weekends in the autumn and to hearing Fearne, Greg and Dev develop in their new slots."
The changes come into effect from 21 September 2009.

Fearne at 10am every week day? I would have preferred somebody like Sara Cox. Surprised they're shunting Jo Whiley to weekends only, but I can't say I'm too disappointed about that.
Good to see the Live Lounge is staying.
Greg James has a much better timeslot. No more Edith on weekday afternoons either, which is a good thing.
I have to say I'll really miss Edith's show (I'm probably the only one on here who will) and I would have prefered to see her in the 10-12:45 slot rather than Fearne bloody Cotton, who'll probably be off ever second day with her TV committmenets.
Good move bringing Greg to daytime as well. I think Jo's show will do quite well at the weekend, as it'll have the same fibe to it as Dermot's on Radio 2.
This is obviously a move designed to keep the younger listeners.
AND WE'VE GOT RID OF NIHAL!!!!!!
Jo's been doing that show for so long now, and it had become a wee bit stale. And every time I've listened recently she's been bloody late! So she'll probably welcome the chance to spend more time with her kids. Fearne is a subtle way of introducing a slightly younger sound to the station, without offending the current listenership, and to use the phrase used to justify Zoe Ball coming to the station - 'she really likes music'.
Delighted to see Greg get a more prominent shot - he's a hard-worker and this will give him a great opportunity to develop his personality further. I do see him as more of a natural breakfast/drive presenter, so it'll be interesting to see what he produces for this timeslot. Again, Edith's show had sounded a bit stale and movie-obsessed as of late, but I do like her as a presenter and hope she'll be looked after.
Nihal was promoted too much too soon - giving him dep shows on the breakfast show when he was nowhere near ready over one Christmas pretty much killed him stone dead before his career even got going. Have to say I'm not a fan - don't know what it is, but I just find him annoying and borderline commercial radio.
Hopefully lessons will be learned from this experience with Dev. I have to say, I have major concerns with 1Xtra being the prime feeder network for Radio 1 - it will result in a bias towards one style of music.
Looking ahead, the only worry is it still doesn't deliver a clear successor to Chris Moyles on the breakfast show. It used to be 4.30am was used to try out new presenters for future massive things in the station, but I can't see Dev taking this position. Radio 1 faces a very big decision - whether to go for a very different style of show (Nick Grimshaw etc) and risk alienating the current listenership, or going for a similar style of show (Mills or Greg James) and risk having a similar sort of show which might not be quite as good. Unless they've got something (or someone) up their sleeves...
Personally I don't think there's a rush to get rid of Moyles, but there's nothing wrong with succession planning.
However I am gutted that pre-recorded Sara Cox's Lie-In is staying on Radio 1 - I really enjoy Sara's shows but don't like her when she's not live! But it seems that she will not be live in the near future.
Also would have liked some new talent to the station, not from 1Xtra, but from commercial radio. Just like Greg James was unknown before joining Radio 1, we need some more new talent!
If nothing else it would be a great way of promoting Moyles and Mills the following day.
I think I would have preferred Sara Cox to take over as she has been good whenever she has stood in for Jo, but it will be interesting to see how Fearne does as it needs to cater for a different audience to the weekend shows.
Greg James should be good in the afternoons as he has coped well when covering Scott, but I think he will be missed in the mornings as his style has suited that slot and he knows the audience for that time well.
I have to agree ref Sara Cox. I loved her sitting in for Jo Wiley, and will admit to being another convert after disliking her on the breakfast show.
I'm not sure why the BBC think that Fearne Cotton is so great. She's OK for kids tv, but not sure about a daily morning slot on R1.
I've got no real problem with Fearne but I'm another one who would have preferred Sara to get the morning slot.
My real beef is Greg James getting Edith's slot - I just find him incredibly dull.
Replacing Jo with Fearne's not a bad move but, like others have said, will she ever put in a full week. My guess is that Sara Cox will get a decent bit of swing work out of this. Actually I'd've preferred Sara Cox in full time, but you can see Radio 1 trying to get a little younger.
I quite enjoy Nihal, but I guess he's involved in so much other programming, that he doesn't 'need' a daytime show, either weekdays or weekends, and to keep him on one doesn't exploit his forte.
I'm most pleased about Nihal being ditched- he was appalling. I'll be able to listen to weekends again. I'm also glad Edith Boreman's going at last, though ironically she's actually improved vastly of late, to the point of being listenable.
I'm not sure about putting Gregg James on weekday afternoons- he's too similar to Scott "staged" Mills- I'd rather they replaced Scott, I think he's trying too hard, and his show is sounding more scripted than ever.
I'm actually quite gutted about Jo Whiley being marginalised and I'm really going to miss her show- she may be older, but I don't see why that means she can't be relevant to a younger audience. Are they going to stop playing Madonna because she's too old? I really enjoy Jo's show- it's a great listen, and I think possibly fits in well with the older end of the target audience who will be at work- those at school won't be able to listen to Fearne anyway, which makes it seem even more baffling. I like Fearne with Reggie- I think they work well bouncing off each other, but on her own she is quite dull, and I won't be listening to the new show.
I'm particularly annoyed that if they had to replace Jo wasn't it with the rather brilliant Sara Cox? She seems to be very popular- a lot more so than Fearne blooming Cotton. This seems to be yet another ageist decision- I can't see Sara turning down a return to daytime. It seems age is now a more important factor than a good show and entertaining listen- who cares if Fearne is boring, she's younger than Sara and that's all the listeners are bothered about, apparently.
I think this shows how the bosses have got it wrong again. Keeping the boring movies feature, Gregg next to Scott (effectively the same presenter for 5 hours 45 minutes), putting Fearne in Jo's slot not Coxy and moving Jo to weekends- do they actually consider what the listeners want? Their obsession with age is ridiculous- if none of the presenters are allowed to be over 30 then maybe they should apply the same thinking to fifty-year old Andy Parfitt? After all, if they presenters aren't relevant than how can the person in charge have any idea what the target audience wants?
Greg is a great choice for weekday afternoons. I don't think Edith has sounded good for a long while so weekend breakfast is the best place for her although it does seem crazy that the weekend breakfast host is changing again for the third time in about a year? Hopefully these changes will provide a bit of stability.
No change for Coxy but I imagine she will be the main cover on weekdays now. I never listen to her pre-recorded show on Sunday out of protest. Radio 1 should be live in the daytime every day except for public holidays, there's no excuse for it.
Jo Whiley was getting too old - Moyles will have to go too soon, he belongs to another era. Greg James is a promising prospect.
He's going to focus on games and gaming, apparently.
Fearne's replacing Jo, not Edith.
In my own little fantasy world, let's have Mark & Lard back on afternoons. Now that was quality daytime radio.
One particular concern is who's gonna cover all the holidays- I can see the whole schedule looking like Xmas week again with more than one person off:eek:
