I've checked a few other forums and found out that UK unbranded S2s running Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 show the following. (I bought mine from Amazon and this is also what mine shows)

    Kies shows firmware as
    PDA:K14/PHONE:KI1/CSC:KH2(XEU)

    Type *#1234# on phone keypad

    Version
    PDA : I9100XWKI4

    PHONE : I9100XXKI1

    CSC : I9100XEUKH2

    Build Info : Wed Sep 14 20:34:11 KST 2011

Really isn't a major problem. ICS update has issues- its not perfect and there is no noticeable UI difference because TouchWiz is slapped over the top. So I dont know why the fuss.

Theres nothing stopping you from updating your firmware to a open Europe ICS already available on Sammobile Firmware.

I'm running the Italian 2.3.6 which is excellent and very stable.

It actually is a major problem when you have paid £400+ for a phone and you get treated like an idiot by Samsung, not just once or twice, but repeatedly! The same thing happened back when Gingerbread came to the SGS2 and owners of Sim Free handsets were left waiting. The actual update is inconsequential. I am fully aware that I could run 2.3.5, 2.3.6 or even 4.0.3, however I choose not to and should not have to simply because Samsung can't seem to get their priorities right!

Like many, I purchased my Sim Free UK SGS2 (XEU) at great cost and feel Samsung has let us down in terms of updates. We have been stuck on Gingerbread 2.3.4 while others with branded handsets have enjoyed 2.3.5 and 2.3.6. Now comes a major update and yet again Samsung is going to leave Sim Free owners to last. It would be kind to call Samsung customer service pathetic!

So Samsung, you have forced my hand and I will now reluctantly buy an iPhone 4S because at least you know where you stand on updates on iPhone and everyone gets the update at the same time, no fuss!

iPhone customers get routinely shafted with new IOS updates. WiFi Hotspot isn't available on the 3Gs but will work on it with a hacked rom. Likewise SIRI was on iTunes for anyone to use but Apple withdrew it and only made it available to 4S customers.

I could go on but im sure you get the picture.....

Like others have pointed out 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 were operator specific fixes and introduced nothing of any note to the OS. Unlike Apple!

This shows the differences between the 2 OS. Has loads of pictures of them side by side :D

Not to mention people are reporting on Android Forums and XDA Higher RAM use, battery issues / drain, Wifi crashes and sluggish behaviour as well as other minor issues.

Theres only one way to find out. Flash and test.

If after a week you don't like the GB versions are available to re-flash back too.

Most of the people having problems with ICS are using leaked ROMs and not the official release. Many of the issues in the leaked ROMs were ironed out in the official update although I am fully aware this update is not perfect and will no doubt have many issues. However again you're missing the point. My problem is not the fact that I cannot yet update my phone with ICS, my problem is the way Samsung is conducting the update rollout. It is disgraceful that once again owners of Sim Free handsets are being left to last. When you question Samsung on Twitter or Facebook, you get the same canned response every time regardless of the question, which shows they are not even paying attention to the questions being asked! One guy specifically stated he had a Sim Free handset and the response from Samsung was that he had to wait for his network to release the update - typical canned response and disgraceful customer service!

Yes thats what everyone is saying it depends on operators, Cnet etc all say the same, Everyone ignores the SIM free guys, they have no answer as to why this is the case, probably all boils down to money, they'll want to keep the operators sweet

You will probably need to reset anyway as the ICS updates are causing many issues with peoples phones that haven't been factory reset or wiped.

Its easy to copy pictures and music etc across.
Apps and contacts etc are synced with Google anyway.

Just phoned Samsung Technical Support and spoke to a galaxy phone specialist. For the first time I didn't get the standard response which is something like
Galaxy S2 upgrades will be subject to each network’s own software approvals process'
He said that the software was being released in batches to open market version phones depending on their software version and that by this Friday all open market phones should be able to update via Kies.

I suggested that someone in Samsung should post this on their website, twitter feed etc

Absolutely disgraceful that you had to call Samsung to get this information, however it is basically what we already knew, Sim Free left to last again and, as someone pointed out earlier, this is simply to keep the networks sweet!

I have tried this on my phone and it was successful:D. It didn't erase my applications or settings etc.

My CSC was Italian on GB 2.3.6 and the new ICS CSC is Italian too (the package is multi CSC which means the UK update is already in there and shouldn't be so delayed).

This update will work on phones with the XEU CSC as it is included.

Download the zip and extract (password: intratech@XDA)

Follow the install instructions and put the single extracted file into Odin PDA section.

It updated my phone to ICS, kept my CSC and all my settings too.

You dont have to change the CSC unless you want to have it on UK version etc. Doing this move will factory reset and loose data however!

Samdung, you crock of a company. I pay over the odds for a unbranded s2 for elite privilages.
Instead, you have mugged us and treated us like dirt. The unwashed masses get treated to regular updates via their freebie networks, yet we remain on the original 2.3.4 you are a disgrace!!

This latest episode with ics is the last straw. We will now take our business to Apple where consumers are treated like gold dust. Samdung, one thing you do not do is mess with the elite here in the uk.

    Utter shambles!

    we won't, and they aren't.

    And you're not.

I feel I need to quote Michael Winner here "Calm down dear"

I may only be one of the unwashed masses, but in my humble opinion Apple don't treat their customers like gold dust.

Well, you pay a premium price to be treated like gold dust anyway. Ok, I would like to update to ICS and I know there are other ways than the official one. But I honestly cannot understand how some people can get so wound up because of an update to their phone. If that's the only problem people have got, they should count themselves lucky!
I might not understand why Three customers got their update first, but in the end Samsung only said it would happen this week. Not on the 19th, not on the 20th, not on the 21st ... (you get my drift). This week!
And why would we all go to Apple now? There would still be HTC, Sony, Huawei (I like the look of their new phone) or if you are that bothered to get the updates as early as possible, get the Galaxy Nexus (oops, made by Samsung).

FYI. Due to travelling abroad & wishing to use local pre-pay sim had T-Mobile give me the code to unlock my S2. Involved 2 calls to T-Mobile in Manila and one to Durham. Manila knew of the update but no more. The woman in Durham again was aware of ICS but neither her or her geeky collegues had any idea of when the update completes. She did go on to say Samsung are terrible at answering mails even from T-Mobile often taking 3 months to respond. HTC however are on the end of a phone at any time.
Dispite all I reckon the S2 is the dogs do dahs
