Aside from the Ocean and Empire and the ability to get decent jerk chicken, I cannot think of any other redeeming features about Hackney. People are visibly tooled up and speeding around on pedal bikes with their faces covered up like the populace of the City is filled with suits, ties and pencil skirts. Plenty of good things? Well, if you consider the ability to obtain a gun for under £300 quid a good thing, then maybe so. Otherwise, Hackney is largely a dangerous shithole where you're likely to get robbed if you stay around too long and aren't known in the area.
Don't forget the betting shops around in Hackney Central, delightful!
I'm watching it, but mainly through gritted teeth because of that stupid Jafaicain accent that seems to be popular in the south east of England. In fact, I struggle to understand what they are saying most of the time. The only ones who speak with a 'traditional' cockney accent are the guy whos trying to save the kid from the life of crime, the weed growing pregnant woman, and the old school gangster and his bodyguard who got glassed.
Otherwise its all a load of teeth kissing and wierd vowel sounds. Seriously, do people call the police the Feds? That just makes you sound like a complete helmet.
Yes, unfortunately I've heard it myself, usually coming from guys with their hand in their pants clutching their c@cks.

But that shows just how diverse and real it is.
Some of my friends speak with a cockney accent and some speak (as you call it ) with a Jafaican accent.
I'd say, i speak somewhere inbetween the two.
Londoners don't all speak the same anymore,.....get over it.

I'd say it was the most realistic representation of the area I've ever seen. The boss guys accent is rarely heard from anyone under 35 in hackney ( or anywhere ). I live in SE London and while it's only showing the more depressing side of life ( even in hackney people like to laugh sometimes) ive never seen anything that seemed so realistic.

It was so realistic I can't watch it.
I live in South Norwood and this kind of thing is on my doorstep as well so it is a hard watch for those more familiar with this stuff. This stuff is happening across the capital, not just Hackney, in the areas where jobs are few, prejudice is still a problem if not one openly acknowledged and discussed freely. I have some neighbours that deal but there is literally no point reporting them because the police insist they are too stretched to worry about possession charges unless they're out in public. So the fact they act with little regard for the law and handle things on their own in their own way is grimly familiar.
Also the "feds" thing is an import from American rap slang, it was popularised mostly by Notorious B.I.G. when using his "Frank White" persona on tracks like Victory.
Well, I have to say this is one of the most interesting programme I have seen in a while. Really good, and the general atmosphere and look of the show is excellent

Agree, i live in East London and this is the most realistic representation i have seen. The accent is accurate. My generation, 30-35yrs, speak with the more traditional cockeny accent, gained from our elders, but any younger than that, you will speak the street slang, which people think is black culture, but is now used by most people under 25.
Hackney does have 2 sides to it, as quite a few middle class professionals have bought there, along with the 'Shoreditch types' who rent there, but Top Boy focuses on the estates and shows how you can be next door to wealth, but that lifestyle will be world's away from your own.
Best thing on TV for ages, great acting and really atmospheric music from Brian Eno made this a compelling and beautiful drama. Well done C4 and Cowboy Films!
There was some fine acting in this - I thought too many people were killed in too short a time for it to retain it's believabilty but hey! what do I know?
The street talk was as indecipherable, to me, as it was in The Wire.
I have a relative who has been living in Hackney for a good while now but as someone said there are 2 Hackneys, thank goodness
Very enjoyable, my one criticism was that I felt the sub plot of the mentally ill mother was given too much time, it really slowed the pace of the storytelling down

I suggest you don't really encounter Nazis much though in real life...

You and me both. Unfortunately, it seems inevitable that something is going to happen to her.

A.
Poor dog though
Given the definition of pretentious -
making claim to distinction or importance, esp undeservedly
having or creating a deceptive outer appearance of great worth; ostentatious
I don't see what relevance it has to this particular drama.

I love the charachters especially Ra'nell and his mother who have a fantastic loving relationship and the gritty side to the gangs is very well done.
Can't wait for the showdown tonight!
There's potential to continue the story and it would be interesting to see how the characters lives continue.
Fingers crossed that there is a series 2!:)
But this was very good
But its a channel 4 drama
But it was very good.
does not compute, does not compuuuuuuuuu.
What an excellent program. Scheduling it in consecutive nights was very welcome too,
I particularly liked the fact that it wasn't a Hollywood ending as such too.
More please channel 4.
Best thing i've seen on TV for a long time.
Hope there's another series next year!
