Radio 2 Overnights Has It Worked

I was (and still am baffled) as to why the most popular radio station (in its field) in the country plays recordings from 03.00-05.00 weekdays.
In the days of iplay podcasts etc anyone wanting to listen to a repeat can easily do so.
overnight listeners are surely entitled to have a live presenter as well (we all pay our license fee) .
but has it worked am I needlessly bothered by this have the audiences dropped or increased because of this?

I don't think this was every about increasing audience and I'm quite sure the audience will have dropped and Radio 2 were expecting it to drop.

It's certainly too soon to see if it's worked. Lets ask the question in 12 months.

I think everyone agrees it's a bad idea, and I'm confident audience figures will have taken a huge hit.

This is about budget cuts. It was reported at the time.

And as was said on here by many at the time the budget could have been cut without the need for scrapping live 3-5am.

The lost audience however will be small and anyone who tunes away will be back again awayway.

As far as the national stations are concerned (I think) only Absolute are live most weekdays so there's not exacltly loads of choice if live programming is what you want.

Earlier posts suggested they didn't know that was the case As a way of saving money I would've got rid of Vanessa Feltz and had Alex Lester starting at 3am.That's it.

I don't think they would have saved huve amounts by binning your cheapest show to produce. Having said that if you're changes will impact on the quality of programming wherever you make these changes far better to do that when the audience is at it's lowest like overnights.

Agreed but as said before, dropping Feltz and having a live show from 3am till breakfast would have saved a (I would imagine) sizeable salary.

Even getting some of the better local radio presenters in the overnight slot would have been less expensive than the current set up

I'd imagine Feltz has a much better agent :)

    Classic FM is live too.

I think there's an element of "teddies out of the cot" with this decision, trying to claim that budget cuts have forced them to such a draconian measure. The reality is that there's still plenty of money sloshing about at the BBC, they just don't choose to spend it wisely.

It's also what I would have done, and it's allegedly what Bob Shennan would have done if he hadn't have been thwarted by the BBC Trust, if there is any truth in this: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showpost.php?p=73109403. The way round that, of course, would have been to bin Vine and move Feltz to lunchtimes.

If I wake up during the night and want the radio on then I don't want to bother with anything complicated, I want to just push a button for Radio 2. Similarly many people are driving so very limited in what they can do as they drive.

I suppose I could always listen to the World Service if they did that, even Vanessa Feltz would be better.

Do the presenters/producers of the repeated shows receive "a royalty" for this or could the BBC repeat it as many times as they choose FOC

Also musician royalties - do they need to be paid twice? Of does Sounds if the Sixties etc count as one payment?

Not usually. As the bbc would own the show it can bere broadcast whenever they like. If made by a production company there may be some clause for that in a contract.

They more than likely just pay a blanket annual fee.

If I was in Bob Shennan's position the I would have sacked Vanessa Feltz and started Alex Lester's show at 3 am. By the way whenever I've listened to Classic FM overnights recently Nick Bailey seems to be spending a lot of time reading out listeners e-mails and text messages. Now I reckon ( correct me if I'm wrong ) that most of those e-mails and text messages have been sent in by people who used to listen to Radio 2 overnights.

Being a nightshift worker its actually better . get to hear a more varied selection of songs . instead of all the usual playlist stuff. Also good to have Janice back on for three hours as well

Well the Alex Lester thing on a Saturday night has been a complete disaster. One less listener here, I'd tried it a couple of times but he sounds bored and the show sounds flat.

Really miss Bob Harris at midnight with the road song etc this show just seemed more 'Saturday night' to me, and of course Allinson broadcasting live afterwards.

They properly screwed it up, but Alex Lester should be nervous I reckon, seems like that slot is the one next to the R2 exit door, and poor Bob Harris, if he keeps getting shifted later/earlier then he'll soon be weekend breakfast

I for one, when the overnight changes came in, bailed out of listening to Radio 2.

I am a massive Richard Allinson fan-after dumping him that was it for me.

    I'm not likely to return.

Not for the foreseeable future whilst on Magic.

As they say LBC Steve Allen early show blows Vanessa Feltz show off the dial.

Don't be fooled by thinking the repeat overnight listener figures will be awlful. I can imagine there be some hit a misses. POTPs , Sounds of the 80s 60s possible be on the top as there are a lot of night workers tune in . There are a still a lot of live presenters overnight IE heart , but radio 2 is a specialist station and not all music through the night.

I used to have my bedroom DAB radio set to switch on at midnight on Radio 2 so when I went through it was ready on Radio 2 for me. I liked Janice Long and Bob Harris even I was not as keen on Friday night. But when they put Lester on for three nights I stopped doing this and now have to wait for the DAB radio to start up then retune to Radio 2 but only four nights a week. The other three nights it will be one of the other services.
