[news]'Apprentice' Nick Hewer named as new 'Countdown' host[/news]
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/nov/16/apprentice-nick-hewer-host-countdown
Sir Alan Sugar's The Apprentice sidekick, Nick Hewer, has been hired as the new presenter of Channel 4's evergreen daytime show Countdown.

Hewer will replace Jeff Stelling on the Channel 4 quiz show in December, with his first on-air appearance set for 9 January.

The acerbic Hewer becomes Countdown's fifth host in the show's 30-year history, and will line up alongside maths whizz Rachel Riley and words boffin Susie Dent.

I look forward to this. I wonder if Sir Alan will end up in dictionary corner.

LOL. More of Nick's facial expressions can't be a bad thing.

I'd love to see Margaret back on TV, maybe she will make the odd appearance?

I wonder how Nick will work out in the role? Love his work on The Apprentice.

What a perfect choice of Nick Hewer as Countdown host... I love Nick, and to have Margaret or Alan in dictionary corner would be superb!!! :D

Amazing choice, I can't wait to see this! I'm a massive Apprentice fan and I've always loved Nick's humour. This is a great move. My only worry is that I can't see him doing both shows. He may leave The Apprentice. :(

I guess he must have had screen tests.

Good appointment as he is likely to stick around. The Apprentice can fit around this I'm sure, two series a year, normal and Junior.

After reading the article, thank God that Sue Barker didn't get this gig.

Apparently the deal is that he'll still be able to carry on doing the Apprentice.

seems an odd choice?..but never seen him present anything as such so won't judge him just yet..just seemed a bit quiet on the apprentice to be a main host?

I like Nick but I am not convinced he will suit Countdown.

They should have kept Jeff if the reports are true that he changed his mind about leaving.

I'd never heard of Jeff Stelling before Countdown, so hopefully Nick's lowly TV profile will work in his favour.

Poor Rachel though, she had little in common with Jeff [ I love Rachel but she's rather snobby and the personality of a sloth ] , now she has a wrinkly pensioner to put up with.

No idea why Sue would have been in the running for this as she would have been a very strange (and poor) choice, but according to the article Nick beat out the likes of Sir Terry Wogan, Rory Bremner and Sue Barker to take over from Jeff as the new Countdown presenter.

    Should've been Greg Scott.

I can't even begin to imagine how bad it would have been with Rory Bremner.

I used to watch the show regularly in the Whiteley days, but since Lynam and Stelling were both almost entirely devoid of any personality at all, I haven't bothered for years. I might set a season pass again though, if Nick H lives up to his potential!

Nick was suprisingly funny on "Would I lie to you?" so maybe not such a leftfield choice.

I always felt that their interactions and 'banter' at the start of each episode came across as forced and contrived. I think Jeff has been fine as presenter but there was no chemistry between him and Rachel.

I do think that they missed a trick several years back when Tom O'Connor was being touted for the job and never got it.

Fab news. :) I’d be happy to go back to watching Coundown again if Nick Hewer is to be the presenter. As others have said Margaret spending time with the dictionaries would mean double the enjoyment so hope she does make an appearance.
