Could they make a Titanic replica?

Would it be possible? You know, same name, layout, furniture?

If so, I'm surprised it hasn't been done. It would be a great tourist attraction. :)

I'm sure they could, but why would they want to? People who go on cruises surely want modern bathrooms and all mod cons and stuff?

Dead bodies, icy cold water, bits of boat floating about, course it's possible. :p

I'm pretty sure I saw something the TV about some group who were building Titanic II, to the same (or similar specs) as the original ship...

I'm not sure "come aboard the ship that sank" would be that enticing to many.

I reckon it would be a surprisingly popular ship if a replica was ever made.

its a nice idea but but not practical ,i would not spend my money on a ship called titanic nor get on board its not the way i want to die. however you could build the ship for those wishing to die at sea:D

Don't forget also that some of the construction of the Titanic was what led to the tragedy (not enough lifeboats, watertight wall things not reaching the ceilings, that sort of thing) so they would not - probably could not due to HS regulations - replicate it exactly anyway.

Could they make a Titanic replica?

That's strange as that very thing I have dreamt about most of my life. I have always pondered "Wouldn't it be fantastic to rebuild it exactly to the original drawings"

But if you watched that Ch4 show on it where they remade small sections and pieces of it, you could see that to actually remake the whole thing, would be near to impossible. (Not actually impossible but bloody close!)

The amount of money need now would be astronomical. It's not just the cost of the materials (and they would cost 100s of millions) you would have to remake all the machinery that made the parts in the first place. Add to that retraining people to do the jobs/skills that just don't exist anymore and be stopped at every point by health and safety saying "Oh you can't do it like that!" - "But we have to to make the part the way it was made" - "Oh well you will need 75 firemen and 6 miles of flameproof sheeting for the workers to stand behind whilst they make that part"

And that's before the Unions strike every week for more and more money from the bottomless pit. Back in the day it was "Do you want a job or not?" and you were lucky to have one.

So all in all, a lovely dream, but not realistically possible. Times have changed too much.

The Orient Express is as it was back in Edwardian times. Granted restoring a train isn't as costly or as large a task as rebuilding a ship.

Why not meet the situation half way and build a ship that on the exterior looks like the Titanic (same size, same funnels etc) but inside it's an up to date cruise liner, albeit perhaps with early 20th century decor.

It need not be 100% original, there's no need for a steam powered engine, riveted platework, too few lifeboats or to dispense with modern maritime communications.

Underneath the Edwardian style superstructure there could be a modern built ship with a state-of-the-art power unit with all mod cons in each cabin.

It could well be a huge money-spinner, I'm surprised no-one has thought of it before.

A replica did exist in the RMS Olympic which was scrapped in 1935, she was one of three near identical liners which included the Brittanic and the Titanic which was the last of the three ships to be built and the least luxurious, I cannot understand why she was scrapped and could have been a massive tourist attraction today. After the Titanic sank the Olympic was fitted with many more lifeboats, the water tight compartments ran to the ceilings and the whole ship had a double skin as per the original design by Thomas Andrews which was sadly cut back on the Titanic by the ships owners. If Andrews had have been allowed to build the Titanic the way he wanted to she may never have sank.

I reckon so...I watched a programme the other week for the anniversary or something like that, where they got specialists in who worked on rebuilding (life size) parts of the ship and furniture etc. That was successful, so I don't see why not.....I wouldn't recommend an exact replica though, for obvious reasons :p

Spend all that money, then have to sink it after 5 days?

Not a very good shareholder return.

I'm sure there will be a virtual reality version !
