So Corrie very strong at 9.44m. So that beats the Xmas Day and NYD EE episodes then. Huh!
As for Africa. I knew it would do well. A great start for what was an amazing first episode.
Corrie's rating reminds me of last year when EastEnders built to the big exit of Pat but then Becky's exit in Corrie a few weeks later was much higher. EastEnders does event episodes well but the episodes around them let them down. They're the ones I hear fans complaining about.
Plus the BBC said it would be a significant cost to set up +1 channels, so that's the other reason why they aren't doing it.
I have never saw from my own point of view the need for plus one channels when there is so many alternative ways to catch up with favourite program's that may have been missed,
Sorry if I missed it, but does anyone have the ratings for the BBC3 repeats of the Christmas and New Year's Top of the Pops on New Year's day (7-8 + 8-9pm)

270k (1%) for Christmas and 330k (1.2%) for New Year.
Very well done across the Channels yesterday, BBC1 did very well with its daytime switcherooing, but we dont know whether BBC2 has been harmed by their new schedule. ITV1 had a great evening, but 8-10 will surely not see ratings like that for a while when Midsommer's done in a couple of weeks time? Channel 4 didn't disgrace themselves, Hollyoaks looking healthier but I did think One Born could do better than that... And Channel 5, well they seemed to have fun trying to broadcast the weakest schedule in history, but they'll be fine tonight, as #CBB is already trending!!

And that's the nub of it.
Commercial channels need to maximise the numbers watching each show. From ITV's perspective, it's not about giving viewers a second chance to watch Downton or Corrie, it's about getting the ad breaks in those shows seen by more people each night, by sweeping up other viewers who didn't choose to watch the main showing.
That's why the BBC will never have +1s because there is no commercial justification for it.
It's possible that people use a +1 for a crude means of time shifting, but that's not why commercial networks have set them up.
I don't have a problem with saying "9.7m watched the Downton special, with another 510k tuning in for the same night repeat", but I do have a problem with saying "Downton beat Call the Midwife in the ratings battle by 10.3m to 10.2m", or claiming a "9pm hour win" only by adding in a repeat showing at 10....

Pick of the day on RadioTimes (online at least, dunno about the mag itself). Are they feeling okay? Not like them.

Looks like Daybreak suffered from being off the air over Christmas and no ITN News lead-in any more.
Its probably more due to it still being the school holidays and the fact hardly anyone seems to have gone back to work seeing as the roads were completely empty during my Bus Journey this morning.

I will concede that if we had a level playing field and all channels, at least the main five, had +1s, then it would be less of an issue.
It's just wrong to claim victory for one show that had two bites of the cherry over a show that did not have that advantage.
How can anyone say that is fair?

It's not, I agree with your post, it should be a fair field of play.

So did Downton finish 6th or 2nd?
Did it beat CTM or did it not?
This really matters!!
Yes there suggesting Waterloo Road, followed by CBB!?!?

No wonder ITV are doing some studio sitcoms this year.
And as a bonus they both finished ahead of TXF, which languished in 16th!
The next target is for both sitcoms to get consolidated audiences over 10m for each episode.
Possible!
What did the Boxing Day MBB end up with out of interest?
Did the 5.30am news really mean much to Daybreak as a lead-in?
10.72m for the Boxing Day Mrs Brown's Boys.
Its probably more due to it still being the school holidays and the fact hardly anyone seems to have gone back to work seeing as the roads were completely empty during my Bus Journey this morning.
Get it right, and it can be done!
