Not sure if I'll bother contributing to the new thread, a bit sick of all the anorak chart statistics to be honest, I just like seeing the old footage and remembering how I felt at the time.

There's not that many chart statistics mackintosh  Most of it is TOTP chat.
My final point on this thread is that I want to thank BBC Four for showing the 1977 repeats and helping me discover fantastic gems, it will get better for 1978, Keep it up!
TBH I wish the BBC had put the tired show to bed in 2006 and let it RIP. IMO the programme had long passed its sell by date. I was relieved when it was finally taken off air and disappointed when it was resurrected for Xmas 2/3 years ago.
There was no "resurrection" 2/3 years ago. The Christmas Day edition has been on every year from 2006 to present even after the weekly show was cancelled.

That would be a shame Mrs M. Stick with it. TOTP is about many personal experiences, likes and dislikes, and to be honest, considering each episode begins with a countdown of the Top 30 chart statistics of each week it is an integral part of the whole thing in some ways.
The Gatherer mentions dressing up opinions as facts, but can't even get a simple fact like his DOB factually correct! Funny it was another Waterman based opinion that made him bite, again. Such a niggly poster at times who casts asides at a number of certain individuals I have noticed. Take it or leave it.
Cheerio 1977.....I'm off to next year now. See the rest of you happy bunch over there!
For me, in those final years it became something very different from the days of say 1976,77,78 when it was considered family viewing to a large degree. In the final years it seemed more like an extension of Saturday morning kids TV, or simply a kids show put on when the adult stuff was meant to be on.
BIB - I don't recall seeing promotional videos like this (see link below) on Noel Edmonds' Multi-Coloured Swap Shop in the late seventies:
If pornographic crap like this had come on in 1976 when I was a teenager watching TOTP with my parents in the same room I would have found it excruciating. I intensely disliked the overt sexualisation of the show in the latter years. I never sat down to watch it but did catch Snoop Dogg doing a number about oral sex called 'Let's Get Blown' (Reggie Yates apologised for the language after he'd finished - so that makes it alright then?) and recall seeing a girl group doing a routine dressed as dominatrices complete with whips etc. and thinking WTF are the BBC trying to prove?
I think the TOTP "brand" became tarnished and it would have been better if the BBC had re-named the show circa 1991 to distinguish the later "chaff" from the "wheat" that preceded it.
If viewing figures are anything to go by TOTP in the 70s was more popular as 16 million people reportedly tuned in to the programme during the early to mid 70s. I understand the audience had dropped by 25 per cent to 12 million by the early 80s and by the mid 80s it had fallen to 10 million. In the latter part of the 80s viewing figures apparently began to decline quite rapidly.
The declining amount of viewers of TOTP over the years is mainly down to having more choice. Back in the 70s, there were only 3 tv channels, so certain shows always had extremely high viewing figures. During the 80s, we had the introduction of cable and satellite tv, so TOTP and other shows would never reach the same viewing heights as before.

Blimey, if that's your idea of "pornographic" then you've led a very sheltered life!

The point being made is that it is unsuitable ad a video that could be shown to a wide range of audiences.
It may not be hardcore but it is 'soft' porn and I think it's gratuitous and inappropriate for a family show (if that's what TOTP was supposed to be).
