I don't think there's any 'on reflection' about it. It's not exactly pc to call songs 'gay'.
Why? There's no derogatory intention involved. We aren't saying these songs are bad just some fabulously over-the-top, kitch camp classic and long may they reign.
Have we has Somewhere Over the Rainbow yet, that's got to be up there.

I started this thread and am gay myself. I did not use gay in its new sense as worthless or weak.
Haha. Thanks for unearthing that one. Had completely forgotten about it. I first got cable TV in 1991 and this song was constantly playing on MTV. Great camp song and the girl in the band....just wow.

But it insinuates that gay people are like that.
What's the gayest song instead of what's the campest song is like saying what's the blackest curry as opposed to what's the hottest curry because every black person adores curry.
Anyway - my vote for campest is any of that drivel by Sinitta.
Gayest - I have a gay friend who likes a lot of reggae/rock so anything by Sting.

You are right. I started this thread to discuss records that discuss gay themes hence my suggestion of Lou Reed's Transformer (although on reflection that record is more trans than gay) but it was soon hijacked to discuss camp songs. I remember being at a wedding reception with my partner and someone said we have music for you two "like you know Erasure". I have never been so insulted as I hate Erasure and his assumption that gay men only like Kylie etc. My own tastes tend to art rock like Bowie, Reed, Iggy Pop, Arcade Fire etc. But when Kylie makes a classic like " Can't get you out of my head" I am there too;-)
That joke isn't funny anymore by The Smiths. Seriously gay not camp.
If you want to talk about gay songs by The Smiths you need to mention Hand In Glove and This Charming Man.
"Hand in glove/the sun shines out of our behinds/no it's not like any other love/this one is different because it's ours/and if people stare then people stare/I really don't know and I really don't care."
"Punctured bicycle
on a hillside desolate
will Nature make a man of me yet?
When in this charming car
this charming man
Why pamper life's complexities
when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat?
I would go out tonight
but I haven't got a stitch to wear
this man said "It's gruesome
that someone so handsome should care"
A jumped-up pantry boy
who never knew his place
he said "return the rings"
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things"
Basically about not getting a ride, then making out in the back seat with a bloke, getting dressed for a date and the date not taking what you wear and not getting married because you're having a gay affair and shouldn't live a lie in a sham marriage.
I also agree Samwell's "What What In The Butt" is by far the most outrageously gay song there is.

Ha! Ha! Some people have no shame;-)

More for the delivery than the actual song, obviously.
That makes them camp, not gay.
Some are just pure camp yes but others have a direct focus or meaning for gay people.
Either way, there's noting wrong with describing something as gay. It's not necessarily un-PC in every circumstance.
Crucified - Army Of Lovers

Thanks for this. I liked this tune but have been wracking my brains for who recorded it. You have put me out of my misery.
You're welcome!:D
That said,
Bad boys by wham..... Especially their performance of it on TOTP....
we have a winner

Of course the very first was Over the Rainbow - Judy Garland, Liza's mum!
