Radio 1 still play some metal occasionally. I know Bring Me The Horizon and Mastadon have been on recently.
More gigs in peoples' houses or small pubs is the way forward (obviously mot for bands like Metallica...etc).
Most rock / Metal bands regularly sell out Academy sized venues. Black Stone Cheery's entire UK tour sold out last year and bands like Shinedown, Machine Head, and Alter Bridge also sell out most venues.
